Understanding Scale of Miles on Screen

This is something I have never quite figured out. If I have my (Garmin) GPS set to a zoom level of, say, 0.2 miles, how does that translate to what I see on the screen?

On a paper map it gives you "per inch" so I can look at a road on a paper map and if I see an inch of road, I know that it represents, say 5 miles, if the scale is 1"=5 miles.

Are our GPS screens per inch also, meaning that a zoom level of .2 means 1" = .2 miles, or...? I have not found anything yet that documents this.

On my unit the zoom level corresponds to the scale indicated on the screen. The distance referenced is the distance between the uprights.

Do you not have this?

Easy to miss, IMHO. Different models tuck that scale away in various corners and with everything else that's going on it tends to "disappear".
