Cochrane to Canmore

This is a nice run that uses a bit of pavement but not much and avoids the over-used 1A and Hwy 1. It goes south on Hwy 40 before returning north on Dorian Spray Lakes road into Canmore past the top of the Nordic center. Comfort on loose gravel is recommended! Spray lakes road is either very dusty and loose or wet and mucky, but with a good hard base. It opens long before Hwy 40 over the pass does.

Spray lakes just above Canmore. The road is steep and twisty down to town. Pavement starts at the Nordic Center.

Dutch Creek Road

Most of the long time locals know this one well, and combines Dutch Creek at the north end and Allison Creek at the south end.. The track starts in the north at Hwy 22 and 532 north of Chain Lakes. It goes south on 940 before turning west at the Dutch Creek campground. This is another route best not done early spring as you will run into snow blockages. It stays wet in spots all year and has at least one water crossing that spring run-off would make very dangerous. Be smart and don't go alone unless you are a confident rider and well prepared. Big Barges can do this under most conditions.

First bridge not useable so water crossing. Don't do too early in the year!

Easy washout.

To The Tower

Have you ever wondered if you can get up to the tower on the hill above Longview? Well you are in luck, since I did, and figured out how. There is a gate at each end of the access road that are not locked. PLEASE be sure to leave them the way you find them, or in other words be respectful. Close them behind you if you find them closed and maybe the next rider won't find them locked.

The view from the top is great and there are usually horses running around up top.

The road just north (RR 22) between 543 and twp 190 is not a good bet early in the season unless you just can't get enough mud. The other little Mud run on RR21 just east of Red Deer Meats is also best avoided in wet conditions, that one is bottomless black muck!

View from the top

There was no sign at the north end. I met a oil-rig bed-truck near the north end, he just smiled and waved (all his fingers).

It also crosses one of my favorite little stream fiords, twice north of Black Diamond.

Straight Lines & Little Treasures

This is a nice half day run that takes you south of Calgary with about 30 % pavement. The rest is gravel back-roads that are sparsely traveled. Two gems on it are Twp road 172 that is not to be done in the wet as it is black dirt and bottomless. There is one tiny water crossing on Twp road 165 (concrete base) and a dirt section (avoid when wet as it is clay base) on RR 295 south of Hwy 533.

I also added a short green lane (Fall is best when it is dry to do it) Range Road 33 between Twp road 220 and 214 just east of DeWinton.

Big bikes can do this no problem and if it is wet the best bits (Dirt & Clay & Mud) can easily be avoided.

Twp 172 "Unimproved" road.

This illustrates why dry conditions are best!

Lee - great job on capturing the fantastic riding we have nearby! Your pictures have me itching to get back out on the 950... can't wait for decent riding weather.

Thanks a bunch for posting all of these tracks in one thread - it's a great resource.

Porcupine Rock climb.

Thanks Andy,

Here is a short track that connects 520 (possibly) back to 520 across an easy at first, then rocky, rutted climb and then clay (nasty when wet) road that was impassable at the east end of the track. I will try again to see if it will let me through later this summer or fall.

The area is called the Porcupine hills. There is plenty of random camping available near where the "water crossing", "mud hole" (in spring) and "rocky climb" are indicated.

This was easy, except the rock climb (which wasn't bad) on my 990 so anything smaller should have a real easy time of it. If you make the east end of the track back to 520 let me know.

Trout Creek road as the track goes from the west end of 520.

Top of the trail in the rockier section.

Pick a good line and it is no problem.

The middle of the hill looking down on the meadow and trail top left.

Bottom of the hill near the "mudpit"

The east end of the track. Low on fuel and motivation. Only the surface was dry, snot underneath.

Calgary to Crandel Mountain Campground

This is another variation on a southbound run to Waterton National Park from Calgary. This was done late May (25 &26) of 2013. We encountered a bit of snow on the trunk road heading south but was otherwise great weather. We camped at one of the nicest Waterton campgrounds and being early in the season, nearly had it to ourselves. Later in the season reservations are required to assure a spot. The run north had to be modified due to a bridge under repair that was not navigable.

This run takes you north of Pincher Creek on what is known as Snake Trail, completely gravel and sometimes very loose. Big Bikes are no problem, but the pilot should be comfortable on loose surfaces.

Gas and Coffee stops are indicated. As of 2013 there was one small water crossing south of Blairmore.

May snow on the trunk road heading south.

Near Beaver Mines south of Blairmore.

Campsite watching deer.

Checking to see if the river beside the bridge was doable, but the water was too high and fast in May.

West Sharples road just before Skyline road.

East Sharples road, fantastic riding.

Lundbreck to Beauvais Lake

A short section that is easy to miss south, right after the bridge on 507. Super scenic section of gravel instead of the pavement into the campground & Park.

Another North Calgary Day Loop

This covers a lot of familier ground and combines Ram Falls, Limestone Mountain, Cow Lake and then a pavement run back to Calgary along Hwy 22. It is a long day starting early in Cochrane, but home in time for dinner.

Southern Alberta Points Of Interest

This is a list of Fuel, Food, Camping, Hotels and Tourist spots. Hopefully those riders new to the area or just passing through will find theses useful. I have taken these from my own travels so I can vouch for their accuracy.

Thank you for sharing Lee!
I now have my summer itinerary.

May all your gates be unlocked, water crossing passable and the campfire smoke always blow the other way......
