Best choice for a 6'2 rider: XT225 or KLR250

I know the topic of XT225 vs KLR250 has been discussed to death, but I have a more specific question about these bikes. I'm looking for my first bike mainly for a dirt road commute. I have it narrowed down to these 2 bikes but want to know if at my height the XT would feel really small and uncomfortable. Also fuel economy is a big concern, I'm sure the XT gets better MPG but is it that much difference?

I do not see myself doing any highway riding but some on a single lane paved road with a speed limit of 55 mph.

Can't decide which bike to go for, any advice is appreciated.

Yes, you would be cramped on the XT225. My wife rides one (Write2ride) and she's only 5'3". I have a KLR250 and a DR650 and I'm 5'10". I am comfortable on both the KLR and DR, but feel cramped on the XT. The KLR is a bigger and taller frame compared to the XT. The seat height is also considerably taller. The only reason the KLR isn't my only bike is because of the kick start only. I have had my eye on a KLX250 for a while now, it seems to be the best of both worlds.

Yep, an XT 225 will be way too small. I'm 5'8 and it feels like a kids minibike when I am on one.

Good, inexpensive dualsport bike would be a DR350SE for your size. Try and find a 95 or later to get e-start.

KLR250 is about the same size as the DR350, but the suspension is softer and it will struggle to hit 65mph.

Not sure where you got your info about a KLR250 not being able to hit 65mph. Mine will cruise at 75mph (GPS, not speedo) and still have some left over. True, I wouldn't want to do hours of slab on it, but it will run the 75mph speed limit here in Montana no problem. The XT225, well, that's another story since it gets really squirrely at anything over 70mph.

I would second the recommendation of a DR350 though, I'd love to find a '97+ DR350SE in good condition.

Setting aside which motorcycle would fit you best, these are pretty different bikes. The KLR is a heavy 250 dual sport, at 312 lbs. with a full tank. The XT225 goes 268, so the weight difference is more than 30 lbs. See What do they really weigh? http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...=316846&page=6

And in a Dec. 1990 comparison test in Motorcyclist, the KLR blew away the other 250s on the highway with the most power and the lowest vibration (it has dual counterbalancers). In their performance testing it hit 76 mph in the quarter mile, so it's safe to say it doesn't actually struggle to reach 65.

If I was looking for a used 250 Kawasaki I'd probably buy a Super Sherpa. Good six-speed transmissions on all three bikes, but the XT225 is widest spread of the three, KLR the narrowest, and Super Sherpa about in the middle.

Thanks for all the feedback. The speed of the kKLR250 is plenty for my first bike and the commute, I won't need to go 75 on the kind of roads I'll be riding on, so the 350 would be a bit more than I need, and fuel economy is a big factor.

I've looked into the Super Sherpa because of the good rep it has but they are damned hard to find, and their price is a bit higher for equal year and miles KLR, I guess because they are somewhat rare. Plus their seat height is an inch shorter than the KLR.

So, looks like it's the KLR250 for me. And I'm stoked because it sounds like a great versatile bike and fun to ride.

I would have to agree that it's hard to go wrong with the KLR250. My only time on a XT225 was during the rider safety course, but I got the KLR250 a few days later. For my first bike I think the KLR250 was perfect. Honestly, I wish I never would've sold it. I got it for a great price, the mileage was amazing, and it was pretty comfortable. Even though it didn't bother me for the first few months, eventually I realized I would like electric start better than kick start only. Good choice picking the little KLR, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it.

I'm 5'9" and recently bought my girlfriend a klr250. You should be fine on it. I trimmed the seat for her short legs and feel ok on it. Before that I felt perfect. I've done some tough trails that I really had no business being on and it wasnt too bad. Weight isn't as bad as it sounds due to the lower seat. Highway is fine. Stock gearing feels perfect. Rear brake sucks.

A giant loop coyote fits, this is going to be her adventure ride. I kinda want to buy another one for me now.

Oh snap! I just checked out the wr250r and it is an awesome bike. too bad it's a bit out of my price range.

I called the guy who had the KLR250 for sale and it is sold. That got me looking around for other options and I came across the newer KLX250 which is a dual sport, found a 2007 for $2000. Still more than I wanted to spend but seems like a great bike, how is it different from the KLR? Then I saw some new (2009) Sherpas and starting thinking about them, found one a good distance away in pristine condition for $3100. Which got me to thinking maybe I could search for one even if it was 500 miles from me, if I saw a good deal I could fly out there (I have a one way free ticket voucher) buy the bike (put up the $3000 even though it is twice what I allocated for a bike) and ride it home. Does that sound crazy?

Lots of people have done it. What would you do with a one-way ticket if you don't use it this way? Just make sure you have enough photos of the bike to see its condition before you hop on the plane. I've made some very long drives only to discover that the seller's idea of perfect did not resemble the dictionary definition.

I have owned both. A 2001 KLR250 and a 2007 XT225. And a friend of mine got good deals on one each of these used, and decided he would keep the one he liked best. He went with the KLR250 as the keeper, but he is tall. For a taller rider the KLR250. But, don't sell the XT225 short. It has excellent power and the 6 speed trans is nice. I'm 5'10" or so, and the XT225 was fine for me. And I actually got over 100 miles per US gallon when just thumping around at 45 mph and under. Easy to work on, including valve adjustments. The KLR also has screw type valve adjusters, but, being water cooled, you have more crap to remove and reinstall for access to the valve adjusters.
I loved both of those bikes. If I could find a clean used KLR250 here on the Big Island of Hawaii, or one in the San Diego area (for lowest shipping cost), from a dealer, I wouldn't hesitate to get another one.
And the KLX250 is a great bike too from what I hear. I think they may sit a bit taller than the KLR250.
