Agreed but do it soon. I'm hoping that what I saw was temporary but it sure looked like the parks and facilities are starting to look unkempt. Almost all of the public restrooms were closed. Again, I'm hoping that it was just a little early in the season and they will opening soon.

I sure hope they don't let it run down. Many of the overlook signs had been stolen.

Good RR.

My buddy and I did the whole trip up and back in 2009.

The BRMC is a place I try to do about 5 times a year.

Thanks for the praise. I did my best.

I'm going to try to go back later this summer for a weekend trip. Lot's of the guys there say they like it for the cooler weather when it's hot at home.

I like it for the plate sized pancakes that I had for breakfast.

Yes, Phil and family run a super place. They really make you feel at home.

That place has endless hot water in the shower house.

Great report, D.inP.! Nice pics too. The BRP is one of my favorite rides also. I always wanna go more, but I make it up there at least once a year.

We were greeted and made to feel welcome the minute we turned into the driveway. There were riders of all types, sport, dual sport, cruisers and tourers. All willing to talk and share information. When around the camp fire we were all just riders.

If I didn't need to go back to work to pay for the next ride I would have turned around and gone back until the roads ended...

Nice RR. We're going to do some of the BRP over a long weekend after Memorial day. How did you decide on the distances between your lodging choices? While the mileage seems low for a day, did you stop a lot? How long were you actually riding to cover those distances?
Thanks

Did you guys get a chance to go up Mt Mitchell. Very nice up there. Highest spot east of the Mississippi.

Oooh, thanks for the Willville link. My (only) friend lives in Lynchburg so I often bomb out there for a few days (and have ridden the parkway between Lynchburg and Bedford waaaay too many times), but the far SW tip of Virginia has some places I want to ride that are a bit much for a day trip. Willville has the right spot and prices.

And a quick tip on the bathrooms and such: a large portion of the BRP facilities operates on a traditional prime season schedule. Outside of a few spots, the locations are only staffed and open from Memorial Day to labor Day, give or take. That's why you found a lot of the restrooms closed and general "unkemptness." During prime season it resembles a national park, complete with plenty of traffic on nice days :P But, the Peaks of Otter lodge has shut down very recently. I think it was a private run business vice funded by the park system; don't quote me on that.

Ironically, despite hitting up the parkway pretty much every time I visit my friend, I have yet to travel past Roanoke. I've been from the start of the parkway down, but not yet past. Maybe if my girlfriend decides she's comfortable 2-up on my Guzzi we'll try a trip this summer.

I just returned from a 2 week trip down that way, our 20th annual trip south!

It was nice to see High Country Motorcycle Campground again. I hadn't seen it or stayed there for years, since we used to call it Turkey Tom's!! Also was nice to see BRMC again...we haven't stayed there for years since we have a friend who lives on the other side of the Blueridge and 276 in Etowah.

Love all your Blue Ridge photos. Forget the Goldwing, get a BMW K1600!!

Posted that last one before I finished. Can you tell me the name of the cabin or campground you stayed at, with that cabin in High Country?
Thanks again.

I knew that we wanted 3 stops on the Parkway so I scoured the Internet then plotted what I had hoped were the best places spaced as evenly as possible. We stopped many times and not just overlooks. There are so many great vistas it's impossible to stop at them all. We were on the road six - seven hours a day while on the parkway. If you have an IPhone get the Blue Ridge Parkway app. Lots of great info for gas and highlites.

It's the only cabin available at High Country right now. Has shower, bathroom, sofa, fridge and stove with coffee maker. Call Brent, number on the High Country website.
Take food with you. The stores are a good ride away.

Don't follow web site directions. Ask Brent when you call.
