I'll talk to Jatz in the weekend & see what he wants to do. As it stands I think I will prob come over on the Thursday avo, crash at Nutsos place & ride up via wherever he takes me to the start.
If I could grab a bed at your place Mike on the friday nite - or a piece of lawn it would be appreciated.
On the Sat nite I reckon camping somewhere by the coast - opotiki- would be cool & as we discussed staying again on the Sunday nite.
On the Monday I am thinking heading back to catch the ferry home. Would it be a hell ride to get to welly in time for the 2.30pm ferry from there? I reckon I'd be pretty saturated with riding by then.

However I'm not sure that fits with what Padmei wants. He was talking about starting for home immediately from the finish of the East Cape. Seems a pity not to do the full loop, & if we do that then Opotiki will work well. Then we have options of Waikaremoana, or maybe thru the forestry ala MMMM, or something else.

Padmei, can we maybe do a tele conference with you & Jatz to see if we can align plans?

Good stuff Steve - I'm sure it's going to be a great ride - I'm just hoping to stay upright, keep up ( kinda) and not get lost ( gotta come to grips with using my eTrex :). )

We'll be able to collaborate on how eTrex 20's work. I had a look at Phil's printed instructions, then went out & ordered a GPS. Not sure that Mandy is 100% comfortable with that.

Phil, I can forward the printouts to someone else if needed. PM me if you'd like me to do that. I must owe you a bit for the print run. It makes a nice stack.

It's a 7.14hr ride just coming straight down SH1 (according to Google Maps), so you'd be better getting a later ferry if you want / need to be back Monday. Or we could do a more leisurely ride, stay at Napier Monday night (or somewhere else), then get home Tuesday.

I'm home today ill. Feels like someone has beaten me with a big stick.

Padmei, Jatz, Aslan, Michael & anyone else considering - just to confuse things, I am thinking 2 nights in Awakeri, so we can soak in the hot springs. In between Kawerau & Opotiki.
  • 27 minutes from Kawerau
  • 40ish minutes to Opotiki.
Stay there 2 nights. $34/site (I assume non powered) for 2 persons. We'd get 2 small tents to the site, so $17/night ea. What say you?

Ooooh cool playground too. Hot pools sound nice - I'm sure they'd like lots of smelly old bikers jumping in there.

Thumb thanks to Colin & Phil for the organisation and the GPS Maps

Got the maps loaded onto my eTrex20 - feeling a little more confident about this

Last time I used the eTrex was for the 2012 Dusty Butt - Ryan's maps - worked well

Still gotta sort out my panniers (Wolfman racks) with the soft bags from my DR (requires relocation of the rear indicators) and get TKC80 fitted to the front wheel and a Mitas E07 to the rear.

Not planning to remove both wheels at once - done that before on my 1150 - not good eh Mike (aka Young1) ? :)

Been talking to Phil this morning. As this is not a group ride as we know it, and we are staying overnight in different locations. Apart from the 7:30 start at Cape Egmont there is a chance we might not see some riders again
So as a suggestion we will be having breakfast in Opotiki, Sunday morning. We will be at the Hot Bread Shop bakery thing at 43 St John St (S/Way 35) between 8:00 - 8:30ish in the morning time.
It would be nice to see a few there (even if just for a regroup for those who have already had brekky).

Opotiki breakfast

I'd planned on meeting you guys for breakfast. It was always the intent when I was looking at accommodation for us tenters. .

Have you planned a route to go home yet? Doing anything interesting?
