Front rim failure

Has anybody had or seen a front rim from a 9** completely fail? Obviously this would lead to catastrophic consequences.

I have just noticed my front rim has small cracks (one each side) of every spoke nipple. I really dont know how long they've been there for. I have the original rim.
Im about to go for a remote ride for a couple of thousand kms and Im wondering if I'm taking too much of a risk. I personally have never heard of a rim completely falling apart but I guess I'm not keen on becoming the first. Ive had MX bikes with cracks at the join, but this is a bit different with the cracks running longitudinally and theoretically able to all join up and the rim split in two. I dont really believe this will happen in the short term.

I will definately get a new rim but time is against me for this ride and Im leaning toward taking the risk.

Does anybody have any thoughts or knowledge on this?

Found the same with my stock front 950 wheel about three years ago. Spoke with a very reputable dealer in QLD who thought it would ok then rode to Dalhousie and back on it (5000k) didnt look any different when I got back. Still doesnt. Have a 1.6 Excel on it now though. My 2c but your end result could be different.

It'll be just Fiiiiine, if you live in Australia.
If you live in the US, it'll surely fail.

Somebody's just gotta get sued over something *negligent* like that over here....

here's my rear one, same symptoms have the cracks in about 20 of the spokes

not really complaining about it, 70K- half of it pretty rough, some racing and a lot of two up loaded trips.
One thing that bothered me is that I didnt see it until I washed my bike, which is why I never wash my bike...

Eek

Your real issue is the cracks starting to migrate towards one anothe based on the pic that's a big risk to take on a long ride

I wouldn't chance it based on current state

totally agree, the bike is parked until I find a rim.
Also true about the cracks elongating I would hate to see a front or rear rim failure, it can literaly break in two halves
Check your rims guys

Rims and spokes are cheap.

My cracks in the front rim are the same as the pic of the rear.
I'm obviously going to replace it but I'm not too concerned in the short term unless I see pictures of the cracks getting worse.

I think if they were susceptible to complete failure, we would have heard about it before now.

sure, but when it happens you're the first one to know about it, and your body will feel it rightaway!

Why take that risk?

You will need to replace them anyway. Better do it earlier than take the risk and then replace later. You could fit the 1190 tubeless rim band.
Cheers.

You can order a KTM SE front wheel from DID that will fit your front hub. It's cheaper then OEM. It's a tad narrower.

Maybe someone can pipe in whether your original spokes will work in a pinch?

Probably my next move or Alpina tubeless...
