Question 83 R100RS swing arm bearings

Hello all!!
I have a 83 R100RS and just found out that the swing arm bearings are not the tapered ones of my /5's.
I have been greasing them the same way as my old ones but when I removed the swing arm for maintenance I found they are a sealed bearing and the end seal fell out!
Are you supposed to grease them with the grease gun adapter or not??

Clean the pins you removed and examine them closely. Where does the grease go in and come out?

There is a hole all the way through center just like my old /5's. I used a tapered grease gun adapter to grease them.
I have not tried to remove the bearing as they feel good and I think they would be damaged in the process.

Are you saying they're a ball bearing? Never heard of that before.
83 will have a seal over the outside of the tapered roller bearing tho'

You have the later bearings that shouldn't be pulled apart. You can still grease them. The seals do come off. If you have removed the inner the bearings scrap. The good news is you could fit the earlier bearings if you wanted to. Once you see the price if the later bearings you may want to.

I've never heard of (dual shock) swingarms with anything besides 30203(A) tapered roller bearings. My guess is that once upon a time this bike needed swingarm bearings and someone replaced them with sealed ball bearings. Not a good idea.

That hasn't been cleared up yet Bill.
I think it has the correct bearing.........

The bearing for the 81-84? swingarm has a slightly wider shell to accomodate a groove to retain the inner seal.
The bearing also has a wider inner race, which from memory is 17mm. That is why people who use a standard 30203 as a replacement swing arm bearing need to add a spacer. A standard 30203 is about 10.5mm wide from memory.

According to Max BMW fiche and the factory service manual 81 on use a sealed tapered roller bearing.
As they feel real good I will just put everything back and keep greasing them the same way. I would love to know if there is an inner seal that the grease has to get past or is it just an outer seal.

Just the outer seals.
Lubing is through the pivot bolt 6mm hex hole.
Some have mentioned the difficulty of lubing with the seals in place. The seal has either been pierced or removed to allow grease to flow.
The bearings sure as hell are tough to get out, but that plastic seal can be pried off allowing removal of the inner bearing.
More info from others would be helpful.
