L1616 Le Voyageur

I begin a cross-country ride on my 150cc scooter tomorrow, Tuesday, May 28. I am calling the trip L1616 Le Voyageur A cross-country scamping adventure. Phase 1 is from my home in northern New England to Louisville, Kentucky. I will have a daily log and make updates here as is convenient from the road. A full description of the trip is being chronicled in my journal: L1616 Le Voyageur.

Here is an approximation of my route. I plan on a lot of back road riding in West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. Two areas I've wanted to explore for a long time.

Follow along. Any advice on free camping is greatly appreciated. Given the great ride reports here, I feel this trip should be cataloged under "Adventure Lite."

You and me got different definitions of lite. New England to San Diego is not my idea of lite but you certainly have the experience to call it as you see it. Safe travels.

Lite

:-) Given the great off-raoad riding and single track reports, my ride all on paved roads, where a set back is having to eat breakfast in a chain restaurant, is "Lite" by comparison. I appreciate comments to the contrary.

I am doing those last minute things that need to get done before take off. T minus 4 hours I reckon. I'll post a photo of the fully loaded bike just before I go.

Hi John,

if you still want list of free campground or for under $12 POI for your GPS, I found this website very helpful as they have way too many they divide it into 5 sections (SE, NE, Central, SW, NW).

US Campground POI

Hope this help??

Day 2

Low 56 High 79
Thunderstorms with intermittent sun
Distance: 161.4 miles

Johnstonn, NY to Whitney Point, NY

A day of rain and plentifuul farms.

My current scoot is the same make and model as my previous one, Moto Fabini. I call the new on Ruby. Moto Fabini's engine blew in the scablands of Washington State. I gave the bike to a motorcycle dealer in Ellensburg who was kind enough to hold it in storage over the winter as I tried to sell it on Craigs List. No nibbles, so I sent him the title to do with it as he pleases.

I will check out the campsite web site - thanks. However, I have no GPS. I travel by whim and the generosity of strangers. Yes, I am lost a lot and do many U-turns. Hey - it's scamping. :-)

Hi John

Good luck with your trip.

I enjoyed reading your book and it inspired me to get back on 2 wheels after an 18 year break. Picked up a Kymco Agility 125 last year and have been having a great time on it. No touring yet but you never know.

Cheers, Andy

Thumb Quite an undertaking...

Traveling on a scooter for a substantial distance is not a lite adventure. My hat is off to you. Neat idea of not having a GPS. Now you gotta rely on yourself and your ability to use a map. Makes for a more interesting trip.
Ride safe man and enjoy yourself.
Keep us posted.
Ken

Day 4 & 5

I am holding up in Watkins Glen, New York for two days. I want to explore the gorge in the Sate Park and spend some time at the racetrack where they are having a Porche club race.

Last night I ran a test to see if I could recharge my iPad from the battery without the bike running. The answer is yes. The consequences? You guessed it. I coasted from the campground down to a service station where they gave me a jump.

Andymach23 - glad I inspired you. The skinny of it all is just get out there & do it. Have fun.

Blacktruck - If someone gave me a GPS I'd happily use it. As much as I rely on myself, I rely on the goodness of strangers. Yeah, it's an adventure...

Day 6 & 7

Overcast & windy out of Watkin's Glen. Made good milage despite intermitment dounpours. Stealth camped in 45 degree weather. Remained warm & cozy. While packing, dropped bike & broke righthand mirror. In Jametown, New York thawing out, thinking about a motel.

Rain Trucks Snakes

Being hammered by rain in central West Virginia. Oil & gas trucks roam through the hills. Black snakes come out to sun themselves. Had a spill in gravel pulling off road. All is well. May motel it tonight...
