ī11 990R - fork springs w/o spring guide work

Hi!

What is the stiffest spring I can install in my forks w/o having the need for trimming the spring guides. Bike is ī11 990R. The correct spring rate for me is probably in the area where spring guide trimming is needed, but I have other bikes for other purposes and I just want to stiffen up the 990R a bit to stay a little higher when braking. I have no plans to do any revalve so itīll be stock.

Its no big deal to linish the plastic guides on a bench linisher or sander , you also can do it with a block plane and a vice, very simply. as for spring rate i will choose .60

I am lazy BUT, fork springs I usually change with the forks still on bike just lifting the front after caps are dismounted. Is it possible to dismount the spring guides from the rod when it is sticking out on top of the forks (which are still mounted to the bike) ? I guess yes.... ?

Where did you buy the springs and what kind of bike do you have? And you are pretty sure no binding is present?

I used 0.64 springs from slavens racing and had to trim the guides - 5mins job using a rasp file.

Got them from Superplush Suspension and certain that there is no binding. You might want to call them to discuss. Very helpful.

I had to trim my guides for .59 SE springs, took about 5 mins per side with a file.

Removing the guides doesn't require any more work than the springs, just unthread them when you have the caps off and the springs removed.

I just put in some .62's from Slaven's and didn't need to trim.

Funny because I know the guys at SuperPlush and you have to trim the guides. Watched them do it many times. You might want to open your forks and take a look. I'd bet your wrong

Could I also ask about your opinion for springs?

1.60 / 2.50 combo on real knobbies (you know these )
Rider: 110 kg w/o gear
Luggage: Typical only one medium roll bag on the tail for some daily needs
Terrain: Gravel roads with pot holes, no carving, no woods
Style: Fast as possible with heavy breaking into turns, standing up most of the time

My problem is that the different advise is all over the places starting from .58 to over .70 Thatīs a huge difference. Canīt I use the sag rules for this type of bike? Why should it be so different so some guys take a .70 spring for their usage and another rider in the same ballpark chooses .59 ?
If the sag rules should apply, then someone knows the bike weight + my own weight and could easily mention the correct spring rate + - one step in each direction. Am I totally wrong?

The difference is the preload setting. .59 with the preload maxed out will have about the same sag as .70 backed all the way off. I went with .62 and have lots of adjustment either way depending on load, and I am happy with them. For your weight and luggage the stock rear spring should be fine. Adjust the sag by the owners manual and roost on.
