,...... I think. I removed the chain guide that I replaced understand the rear sprocket but there is still a rubbing sound when its cold or the chain has cooled down.

Could be the cushion rubbers wearing but there is no free play in the hub.

IT'S like the chain is rubbing in the case or something. A bolt was rubbing on the sprocket. But I removed it when I took the guide off. Will see if it gets worse.

It can also be the chain itself between the pins and rollers. When the chain is hot clean it, get some WD40 spray it down then clean the chain.

Spray the chain with the chain lube after wiping off the WD40 so you have a clean chain.

Worn chains can cause strange noises and vibrations the felt, I had one that made me thing the bottom end of my motor was dying...

Just my .02

How do you do it? This is the funniest thing I've read in a long time. You could get a job working for the US Tourist Board if there's such a thing. Your photos show the US from a new angle, really nice.

And I'm taking a liking to the SE.... Big engine. Big tank. Big ride. Big bucks but well overlook that.

80 in a 55! yes a nice way to make new friends.. Welcome to France

Keep it coming

Dare we ask how many miles the chain and sprockets have on them?

Also, worth measuring link to link over 17 links.... 15.875 x 17 = just a touch under 270mm brand new. 272mm and time to change. Changed mine yesterday back to OEM specs and found the original was one down on front and 3 up at rear.

Read on here somewhere that equals a reduction of 600rpm at 75mph approx or as you've just posted above barely able to get in top gear at lower speeds on the highway.

What sort of MPG are you getting?

Trip report is excellent btw. Some of those pics are outstanding. Notice old mate has been following you around the country.

That particular time the chain had about 40K miles on it, yes long overdue but I did not need constant adjusting and none of the links were tight so I thought it was the motor going since it had over 80K on it at the time.

Turned out I was wrong...

Update 19 june 13

Well a bit more of an update. After leaving Douglas my route saw e head north again on the I5. Not a lot of pictures were taken as it started to get bloody cold & wet. AND still is.

Mind you as im typing this in my tent there is the loud hiss of a sprinkler about a foot from my head. That will teach me that green grass in an RV park is green for a reason. My sandals are getting very clean at the moment as they are over the frigging sprinklers to keep the water out of my tent. Plus its cold and raining.

And yes Dave i can here you say harden up.

I have managed to upload some drifthd footage to youtube of yosemite.

Here is some random pictures of Oregon.

And the wet campsite.

They call this sucker Bigfoot

Went over to gresham KTM today to get some cush rubbers. Really nice bloke running the shop over there who offered to ship e any part to anywhere i am if need be.

Came back to Silverton where im stopped at the moment and was invited over to one of the big fifth wheelrs for dinner.

Met Wally who was a real nice bloke. Turns out hes a retired professor out visiting his daughter & son in law. He cooked a mean curry with yam & pumpkin. Good to get some solid tucker.

So up near Bear Valley i camped under an old railway bridge. Turns out it aint that old as the trains rattled through there at night. Boy were they noisy.

I see you went through Yosemite, you really missed out on some spectacular roads just north going over the mountains in the central valley. Hope you are able to get back to do them again..

And remember don't eat the big mints in the urinals no matter how good they smell...

We talked about your bing drinking while on the road, apparently you did not listen. Those few hours you forgot about a couple days ago, well now you know what happened to you. And why your breath is urinal fresh....

Seriously....

This is where i camped thinking that the train line near the Shasta lake would be not in use. WRONG.

There were some young blokes who had lived in the area all their lives who were quite happy to tell me that they grew weed for a living in the area.

So today i will swap out my chain and sprockets. They have about 25,000kms on them so i guess thats not too bad.

Will replace the cush rubbers too. Just hope the rain will hold off during the process.

Wicked

Today. Was spent changeing chain and sprockets. Went down on front to 16 tooth. Seems easier on the clutch now as gearing is not quite as tall.

Kms changed at 51,600
Went into Macs a local pub for a feed. Now the steak & prawns (Shrimp) were pretty damn good.

Can not get over the amount of V8 cars & pickup trucks here. Like falcons & commodores. At home.

Had a chat to old mate who was camped next to me. He had a Dodge ram with V10 petrol in it. 8MPG.

Again the people are so friendly & the children are very polite.

The kids were calling me sir. Which is quite funny as I remember in the old army. Days you would yell at someone for calling you "Sir" and say don't call me sir i work for a living

Refering to not being an officer.

So will push on north tomorrow and see what the day brings.

Bit more of an update.

Left Silverton, great little place. Headed up towards Hood River.

I followed the columbia river road just off the freeway. Got a couple of good pictures.

Met this bloke in one of the car parks near some sight seeing areas, who was watching out for thieves that break into cars. Apparently this happens a lot. He recommended that i should be carrying a piece.

Its been about the sixth time someone has recommended to me to be packing a piece (Pistol) with me. Find this quite funny.

Some more pics

Still more stunning scenery.

Was good to be getting out of the rain in Oregon.

Going along the river near the washington state border was just some great views.

Big wind generator fields just looked awesome but out of place.

Came across this car in The Dalles.

Managed to fine a nice camp spot north west of Gleed and Yakima. Was right next to some stunning rock formations.

Quite funny hearing a lot of gun fire in the evening up in the hills.

The locals seemed to like this little spot for trout fishing.

They even offered me up some of their smoked trout that they had caught at this very lake.

Got up in the hills near Mt Ranier national park and did what any normal Aussie does who hasnt seen snow...

Ate some.

Then made some yellow snow.

Mt Rainer

It was superb.

So the plan is to keep going northish. The clutch master cylinder seems to be playing up a nit cause some dick thought that flushing it with petrol would be a good idea. Will just keep it topped up and see how it goes.

Are you missing the old girl Hodgo?

Looks like she would have been a nice easy ride so far on the AT.

Mate I tell ya ... you have to spend your LSL over here its is awesome.

Just ordered a coffee from starbucks to use their wifi, I go to pay for it & the chick behind the counter says "Oh No Sir" yours has already been paid for.

There are truly some nice people over here.

Ive said it before & ill say it again, this trip is turning out to be more about the people that I meet than it is about the places I visit.
