Cool2 My contribution to his ride thread..

How two dumb asses from two islands on different sides of the planet manage to get together and go on a memorable trip out to Colorado

So after spending the last few years wanting to go back to Colorado the opportunity finally arose with the added bonus of
getting to show a buddy from Australia some of the great scenery to be found there.

Considering the highest point in Au is 5K feet or so our camp ground was higher up that that. This was going to be fun.

We left on Friday and drove none stop to our campground which was south of Montrose off the 550.
We decided this was going to be the best location to do the myriad of loops that are available within that area.

Loaded and ready to roll.

This was the total ride for the four days.

Altitude Profile

Notice almost the entire time were spent 1 mile above sea level or higher....

Day 1 Ride:

We decided it might be fun to meet up with a group of people that were getting together for a Horizons Unlimited meeting out in Grant Co.
This was the first time I have ever met up with this group and it was a pretty decent ride to the meting place about 200 miles.

We decided to go over Cotton Wood pass on the way which was our first pass of the trip.

Route:

Hodgo and I at the top:

and the surrounding views

The ride up was pretty uneventful, mix of graded dirt roads and single lane blacktop.

After the 12+ hour drive up we both were in the mood to ride so not many pictures were taken along the route. We got to Grant, Co for the HU meetup.

Campground:

Our bikes parked while looking to find the head FF in charge.

Tents along the river.

more of the campground

We got to talking with the guy in charge and it was 50 bucks per person for the one night,
we decided it was not worth the price of admission and decided to continue to ride on and see what else there was to find.
We ended up riding for about three hours in the pouring rain, going down dirt roads to find closed campgrounds etc.
We finally said screw it and ended up in Woodland Park where we just caved and got a motel for the night,
which was just a couple bucks more than the HU Campground but included a great bar outside to sit and talk with some of the characters
in the area and free breakfast in the morning.

It was a good decision.

Lucky for us they had easy to meet minimum requirements.

Day 2:

After drying out from our very soaking riding the night before we headed out from Woodland park to Pikes Peak.
Of course with the Aussie leading the way we first headed towards Pikes Peak Raceway, which was the wrong direction.

DOH

Route:

we got the bikes loaded and ready to roll in the morning after taking advantage of the free breakfast,
this was the last time we got to sleep without dealing with an rain storm, thunder, lightning or wind.

Prior to rolling out of there we ran into this couple in their 70's that were rolling around the state on the Harley.
She was a trooper and Adrian will keep talking until you pry him away with a stick to get started with the morning ride.

The ride up to Pikes peak has now been fully paved which was a disappointment but we went up to the top anyways since we were already there.

Peak Proof:

I think the altitude was getting up to his head.

He even got to stop by the North Pole.

We found this great little family owned lunch spot, but for the life of them French Fries should not be made that way....

His shirt was getting a little attention and a lot of laughs

The rest of the ride back was under blue skies

Day Three:

Today was the Imogene Pass ride, made a nice loop of good dirt, twisty pavement and then of course the pass itself.

The Route

One shot of the roads

and the dirt was perfect some moisture in the ground made for a mostly dustless ride.

We finally made it to the start of the road to the pass.

Of course the Aussie had to get in the picture

contemplating the views

View from part way up the top

Top of the mornin...umm pass.

We decide to head down at this point, it is starting to get a little cold up there for the Aussie.

Still going down heading towards Telluride

All is good!!!

After a short bit of pavement we head back on some more dirt heading towards camp.

Houses in the middle of nowhere

We ran into this guy who just retired and bought a place down the road, he was telling us the house below was the one used
in the opening scene of the original version of True Grit. The roof over the porch is in the film.

The guy

The house

And the ranch from the film as well

The rest of the ride back was uneventful but fast.

Day Four:

This was the Alpine Loop day we decided to get to the loop via Ourey. Did a short dirt/pavement stretch to get off the 550 and out to the starting point.

When we stopped for gas, it was clear on the opinion they have for LA, which I cant really argue with...

We gas up and head up the trail.

The first part of the trail has been washed out the prior evening in a flash flood, so this was the only place where I dumped the bike,
it was really tough going through that stretch. Not any real pictures of that stretch, it was pretty nasty.

Once past the worst of it the rest of the ride was pretty much like this...

Of course we would be riding into the clouds...

Got to the top of the first pass.

It was very low visibility

and high up there

Once we had a break in the clouds had some nice views

Heading down towards the other half of the loop

We got back into some sunshine

On the way down we ran into this group of people all of whom were from Georgia and riding the area for a few years.
After a few stories we parted ways and continued on our way.

Always coming across different ruins and buildings along the way.

We make it into Capital City, which is for sale if you are interested in being the mayor of your own town...

All building included in the sale...some TLC required...

The remnants of an old damn

We were now headed up towards Cinnamon Pass

From here we headed out the way we came in Via Ourey...got out to pavement and jetted it back to camp.

I'm being followed...

Showboating...

Pissed Wtf?!

You been riding around MT now for a couple days and no updates....

Not like your doing anything important, updates are required to continue our interest in your travels updates....

Besides I am tired of the mindless prattle that is from Sean-O and Chop-Chop, they are worse than you and I thought that was impossible...

I was wrong.

So I have been in eureka with some truely amazing people staying in a little wood cabin that can only be described as a dream.

I have not had time to scratch myself. Experiences so far are.

Water skiing got up double tried single.
Did a ride along with city police. Served civil papers. Several traffic stops. Took stray dogs to pound. Issued speeding.g tickets. Attended domestic violence call where person was armed with a rifle & shotgun but wife had covered shotgun with BBQ sauce.
Attended local Rodeo.
Helping host son rebuild VW Baja bug engine.
Travelled various high lakes in the area and hiked a few miles.
So some photos to come with a better internet connection.

Stay tuned for more action.

Apparently

His time spent in MT is so great he cant be bothered to provide any updates or such about what he has been up to and where he has gone.

Basically leaving the rest of us arm chair adventurers sitting on our thumbs having to go elsewhere to get our fix on good pictures and stories of other people travels.

Son of a bitch....may you have a blister on your ass the size of a grapefruit and be mistook for a Kiwi every place you visit and only attract the attention of toothless ugly women. I would have said sheep but I think that would be a step up for you.....
