I guess being close to broke and homeless does have its perks.

Last nights accommodation free with personal wake up call from the fisherman.

Got me up just in time to finally get some clean waves…

Not much has been going on of excitement to anyone but me I guess. So a couple of pictures is all I have to offer.

Ecuador has been proving to have some very beautiful camp spots on the side of the road. Although to camp at a hostel is only around $3 - $7 over a week or a month it all adds up. So being on the verge of having nothing left. I have been free camping as much as possible.

This was an abandoned garage. I think someone in the big houses on the hill must have seen my cooking flame, for at about 12.30 in the night 3 cops showed up. Lucky for me they did not care I was there and I was allowed to stay. Moving in the middle of the night puts me in a shocking mood.

This is 3 German guys I meet. They brought this old V.W bus in Chile and are headed up to Colombia, then back down into Brazil.

The greatest satisfaction you can obtain from life is your pleasure in producing, in your own individual way, something of value to your fellowmen. That is creative living!

When we consider that each of us has only one life to live, isn’t it rather tragic to find men and women, with brains capable of comprehending the stars and the planets, talking about the weather; men and women, with hands capable of creating works of art, using those hands only for routine tasks; men and women, capable of independent thought, using their minds as a bowling-alley for popular ideas; men and women, capable of greatness, wallowing in mediocrity; men and women, capable of self-expression, slowly dying a mental death while they babble the confused monotone of the mob?

For you, life can be a succession of glorious adventures. Or it can be a monotonous bore.

Take your choice!

Neil Gaiman.

One of the great things about the ride down the coast of Ecuador, aside from the kind people, great free camping and mediocre waves.
Has been all the hill climbs visible from the main road.

I felt like Malcolm Smith, form Bruce Browns film. On Any Sunday.
The one pictured above offered a fantastic view over the ocean.
It may not be the "widow maker" But it sure was fun.

Good for you sir. For remember he who wins the rat race, is still a rat.
Plus just as your finishing up I will be about due to enter it again. So the balance will be kept.

My man Matt,

Balance is over-rated. Hey, I made it to Ecuador. Currently in Quito heading for the mountains. If too cold up yonder I may have to come down to those sketchy surf beaches and pester you.

Your ADVpal,
Tio Juan

Hola senor Downs,

I am sure you will love the mountains. But I hope to see you down here on the coast also.
Is a beautiful country for sure, and the gas is so cheap!

An old one which has nothing to do with motorbikes. But I thought you might like it Tuna.
Just don't ask me where the surf spots are.

Hey Matt,

I'm heading down to the Ecuadorian coast. I'm gonna hunt you down like a wild animal. And don't think you can stop me finding you. Ridin' down the road with a freakin' surfboard on an XT225. I'll find you and your sketchy steath surf spots. It's my new mission in life.

Of course, if I find you, my lips are sealed as to your location.

Your ADV pal,
Tio Juanito

Matt, I kicked you some gas and food money. One of my sons is a big time sponge boarder who lives for the hurricanes that track off the East coast in the fall.

Please enjoy a major pig out on me.

Cheers

Hey ex_MGB,

Way to go amigo! I met Matt in Colombia and he is living on the edge. Ramen, beans, rice and surfing. You are my new hero.

And hey, anyone reading this ride report, please kick some gas money Matt's way. I know I did.

He's one of the good ones. Let's keep this ride report going.

Kindest regards,
John Downs

Just had a bald eagle do a strafing run 100' away on the ducks looking out thru the plate glass window on the mostly frozen marsh as I type this.

Matt is cheap entertainment for an oldster. Hoping it will be me next winter.

In the meantime I hope he takes a picture of a gigantic spread of food at an ocean side cafe with hot bikini chicks on either side and in the background 15' glass smooth breakers with a surfer shooting out of the curl framed by palm trees, tropical blue sky and a white sand beach.

John, you are the hero of us old guys. Keep on interacting with the next generation, maybe they'll think there's a few oldsters that are not too bad.

Cheers
