Yep, I hit a moose a number of years ago on my 'ol Beemer. Luckily tho, both of us came thru relatively unscathed.

It happened on a dark Fall night up in the foothills behind Anchorage. A warm Chinook wind had blown into town and I decided to go for a late night ride. I went down the Seward Hwy along Turnagain Arm south of Anchorage then came back taking the long way home by going up into the foothills behind town.

It was after midnight and no traffic so I was clipping along at a pretty good rate northbound on Abbott Rd. As I crested a rise a moose came running out from behind some bushes and crossed right in front of me from right to left. I knew we were going to hit so as I was applying both brakes I turned my head slightly to the left preparing for impact.

My body laid up against her chest from helmet down. The glancing blow knocked the bike into the oncoming lane before coming to a stop. And I DIDN'T crash! Amazing. And the moose didn't seem to be injured either. I'm glad the Beemer's cylinder jug didn't catch her leg. I'm also glad I'd just gotten a jacket with dual density armor as my shoulder was still very sore for days afterward. My right foot was also very sore from getting slammed against the engine.

And how far DID the bike impact into the moose? Far enough to leave some moose hair stuck right smack in the center of my now cracked fairing! My right mirror was also torn off as was the horn off the right side frame cradle. But thankfully no injuries to me or the moose. I now jokingly say that I "counted coop" with a moose. I then rode home VERY thankful it wasn't any worse and totally amazed that I didn't crashed!

I had the bike till sadly I totalled it a few years ago. ADV'er FlyRescue has been working to bring her back to life. I've said it a few times before, hard to believe I used to think I was pretty "sporty" on that 'ol baby, a lovely '82 R100S.

How about it AKDuc? Sounds like there's a story here.

Edit
Too late!
Whoa, that's incredible Mark, glad all survived. I think we all dread ever coming into that situation and yet all know just how real the possibility is.

Stone Sheep in BC

Was jumped by a 3/4 curl Stone sheep ram just south of Boya Lake on the Cassiar Hwy... came around a bend way over the posted speed limit to find 4 rams by the road. the one on my left decided he needed the security of his freinds on my right as I was in full ABS panic mode. As I was bracing for impact, I saw the ram plant his front feet and jump right as he passed between my windscreen and left hand mirror. I buried my head into my tank bag and expected a collision that never came... Fastlane was directly behind me hard on the binders as well, and when the bike finally came to a stop all I could hear was him screaming "He Jumped you... He Freakin' Jumped you!!!"
According to Dave, as I threw myself forward into the tank bag, the sheep cleared my back between me and my Givi topcase and gracefully landed on the other side without ever touching me or the bike... I had to warn Dave to move away from me as I thought I was going to drop the bike... severe tunnel vision, only time in my life that I was about to pass out... major adrenalin rush
