tail rack weight limit

Gonna put a bdcw tail rack on the 990. How much weight can i safely pack on it?

It depends... on how fast you like to ride and how your suspension is setup. Too much weight too far back can lead to speed wobble issues. Steering damper is good insurance.

17.6 lbs. ok so who has broken a ktm 990? and how much was on it when it failed? I have seen two very big bags, hard bags and a small girl on my buddy's bike for years now.

I think it all depends on how you have it mounted - stock or atop additional bracing of side racks that meet at the top and also mount to the passenger pegs. Personally, I've had mine loaded with a heavy bag and a rotopax 1-gal can. You biggest issue is going to come from lightening the front end, not the weight on the rack.

Agree with that, better off bringing the weight down lower if you haven't already.

Best answer is probably the least weight you can but mainly for handling and they will take way more than 8 kg for sure, KTM will have their "safety factor" built in to avoid the law.

I broke the subframe with about 12 lbs on a 2012 Adventure 990R 2 weeks ago. Clean snap right where the lower support tubing stops towards the tail. I have had the tail loaded with much more than this before but I was flogging it pretty hard at the time. Still no word from KTM if they will warranty it or not (still under warranty for 3 more weeks).

I broke mine exactly at the same spot on my 2012 990R with around 7300 kilometres on the clock I was carrying a single swag and helinox chair which weighed in at 7-8 kgs, it broke on day 12 of the 14 day APC rally here in Oz, and I was pissed of at the bad design when it happened, the tubing should have been double all the way and the problem would never have occurred, I have been informed by my dealer that my warranty claim has been approved and am now waiting for the new sub frame to arrive, apart from that the bike was superb.

Just heard back from KTM, they are going to warranty the subframe. Now to decide if it's worth while to reinforce the new one. I think the tubing is cast so not sure if I'll do more harm than good in welding braces to it.

The factory welded to it, why not? I think a solid aluminum triangle piece tig welded in where yours cracked would reduce stress risers and increase strength dramatically. If mine ever breaks that's what I would do.

I think that's the secret....fit the side racks before putting a top box or solid cargo on the top rack. The lever arm of a standard big KTM box for example aft of the mounting is massive.

I think you can get away with a decent heavy soft bag on the top rack without side racks though. Something with enough 'give', but there's a limit to everything.

The handling is a different issue that you have to apply common sense to, and I can see where a steering damper would help. The pisser is being on a trip and having to repair a rear subframe.

Perhaps anyone who has broken the subframe will say if they had the side racks fitted or not.

No side racks mounted when I broke mine. I had them welded up and added some fish plates for bracing and broke it again with the side racks mounted but a top box with a full load. I don't think the fixed subframe was as good as the stock piece.
