Moonshine: I need the how to

I recently visited the Smoky Mountain area and sampled peach moonshine. I love it. And I love the idea of making it yourself, if for no other reason that to be able to serve it to friends around the bonfire. Can anyone give me some insight into the process? Is it too complicated to just make a small batch as an entertaining experiment?

Make sour mash with most anything you want or have laying around. Heat it in covered container and recover the boil off via a condensing tube. Drink.
Might be expensive or not depending on your toy budget but quite simple. I am sure Google can be more specific.

Buy a gallon of kerosene... pour into pint sized mason jars and cap...

Pretty close to the more fashionable stuff...

Do you want whiskey, or simply potable ethanol? Whiskey requires a pot still and you retain more of the flavor of what you put into it (traditional 'shine) or you can build a column still and get a more 'refined' but neutral product, more like vodka. Nice side of that is anything that can be fermented can create the latter and you throw flavorants into your storage vessels.

Note: To the gov't agent reading this, its all theory and conjecture.

kitchen stove top get ready for the party method:

wrap copper tubing around something solid and cylindrical so that the coil will fit inside a two liter bottle. leave plenty of length on both ends. bend one up and over and attach to the top of a pressure cooker. cut the bottom off a two liter bottle of pop. drop coil into bottle and run other end out of bottle mouth. bend out the tubing and cut to whatever lenth. place this up on a wood box in the sink with a hole cut in the top for the bottle to sit, and a hole cut in the side where your tubing can protrude. attach rubber hose to reach your catch recepticle.

go buy the cheapest crap wiskey you can find, and boil it down in the pressure cooker. run cold water in to the pop bottle over coils while this is going on.

as the wiskey simmers and condenses, the good stuff will be released trapping the crap in the pressure cooker. Repeat two or three times as desired. catch some drip in a spoon, and if you get no blue flame when trying to ignite it, re-distill.

or make your own mash and wait weeks for it to ferment. really good shine has no taste, and will evaporate as you swallow. put some in a jar and drop in a skinned peach.

And you thought jerkin off was the only way to go blind

Honestly, it's not worth it on a small scale. More time and hassle when you can buy decent vodka pretty cheap.

i tried using a pressure cooker, copper tubing and bucket of ice. Monitored the temperatures to make sure the nasty alcohol was gone leaving only good healthy stuff. I ran it through 3 times and still wasn't very good

A good way to do it is a water heater. You can set the temp to exactly what you want, build your column and go.
But it's still not worth it small scale.

Great info. No worries re government agents. No plans to distribute. The commercial shines (Smoky Mnt Moonshine, etc) aren't sold in Canada. I'm going to give it a go I think, just an experiment.

What is it about cops and moonshine? My dad always ran shine (and had a skookum setup), one of his buddies set up an artisan distillery on the east coast when he pensioned out early, and another one did the same on the west coast.

Start with a basic mash. Easiest is just sugar, high alcohol yeast, some citrus fruit chopped up. Put away in a warm place for a few weeks in a closed container same as you do for brewing beer.

Rack it off once or twice, again, same process as brewing beer.

Dad had settled on a refurbed solid steel keg, welded on a temperture gauge and installed a vertical stainless slobber box on the top, with stainless ball bearing fill inside, held up by mesh. Put the keg on a propane powered turkey fryer burner, attach stainless tubing ( I think it was brake lines with flared fittings) at the top to connect to an ex-university lab glass distillation tube, water cooled from the garden hose.

Easy peasy. The above setup came apart quickly, and could be easily stored around the place so that it wasn't obviously a still Just keep your mouth shut about it too, they attract attention like nobody's business.

Not a problem to order one, they just sell them as being intended for water.
