I can't really make it out in the pics but just a FYI because I BTDT.

Drill holes and use zip-ties to hold the hooks of your fender bags in place. I had the rear one come off my bike and get destroyed in the rear wheel. Those bags are these handiest for these bikes but the vibrations of running dirt can get the straps to slack off a bit.

Question Tireism

....hmmm...found my old thread. I must be the only person in the Mojave working today.
Saw the LBtoV crowd taking off to day on the way to work...

Anyhow, let's talk tires for a minute...

The KTM manual calls for a 130 rear (I've even read 140...).
I put on a Pirelli Scorpion (front and rear 130) and the rear seemed sorta big, then went to the MotoZ Tractionator in the same size, which seemed huge.
I measured the two side by side and the Pirelli was actually taller.

The MotoZ is a great tire, predictatble when steering with the rear, albeit very noisy on the hardpack and street.
All that said, the bike in general seems a bit twitchy in a straight line. Not something I like.

My friends '09 450EXC-R calls for a 120 rear.

I'm thinking about going down to a 120. Even thinking about a 110 rear...

Any thoughts?

True (actual measured) width's are really all over the place with respect to manufacturer sizing. I like a 140 (IRC m5b) as its the widest biggest knobbiest tire short of a terror flex available (and doesn't weigh 100lbs like the Terra)

That said, the wide rear is a trade off as it does not turn in as well and tends to push the front more than narrower tires. It really really shines on hills though.

The wide rear should have no [negative] effect on the straight line stability of the bike, that seems like a sag/suspension issue.

I've built a lot of RFS supermoto and dual sport bikes (frame up). The earlier swingarms were not as wide as the later (like '04 I think). Hard to fit a wider tire.

I've always run a 130/80 (usually Michelin S12) on my '01.

I'm building a special bike and I may just do that. I'm taking my 01 SX (started life as a 520) and making a 400 SEXC. (pronounced sexy lol)

Basically, it will be the transmission from a 250 EXC (super close ratio 6 speed, even closer than the XC gearbox) and I'm putting a 400 crank in it. I'll probably end up making a 453 out of it.

...I've just bought a 120 Kenda. Well see what happens.
It doesn't appear any less in width but it's a good 1/2 to 1" shorter than the MotoZ.

MotoZ for sale!!!!

My 01 Ktm 453 exc

I loved this bike and did 2 seprate frame off resto's on it. I just sold it 2 years ago because I could not get it dual sported and bought a 500 exc. The 453 motor is magic I feel like I could ride that bike faster than my 500 but I also had that bike for 10+ years. You have a great bike and platform to work with and if you get a chance go with the 453 kit make that bike electric. here is a pic of my 453 rite after my last resto. Also if you get on ktm talk and can find any of the NOST SS suspension valves frt and back, Grab them.
