The Rocket, in Jacksonville

The Rocket bbq place in Jacksonville, AL. On AL21, just south of town on the east side of the road. Interior might seat 30 people. BBQ is very good, BBQ salad is amazing. Good burgers too!

Go Gamecocks!!

It's very good. You're also near Cheaha State Park and plenty of good riding.

Jacksonville is a nice little college town (I grew up in Oxford and did my first two years of college as JSU).

Also, if you are up that way, check out the Anniston Museum of Natural History and Berman Museum (on AL 21N in Anniston, about 10 minutes south of The Rocket)

I guess I should try it since I'm local. No one in my family likes the Rocket, so I haven't tried it personally. People rave about Cecil's also but, I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there.

Thinking about J'ville I come up with Cooter Browns for ribs, its been a long time sine we ate there but its packed every night. I have my own smoker at home, so I don't eat BBQ out much. When we go out its usually Top O' River whole cat fish and those crunchy jumbo onion rings.

I'm a East Texas native and most BBQ just doesn't do it for me. Taste buds are all fixed on Brisket without the overly sweet sauces...

Top O The River is great.

Betty's BBQ in Anniston used to be pretty good. Haven't eaten there in a while....

I hear what you're sayin' about different styles/tastes of bbq. Lots of variations by region.

I like Cecil's mainly for their ice cream!

For ice cream in Jacksonville, try Jilli Beans or whatever the cup cake place is called on the square. The lady has Ashley's gourmet ice cream, one of the very best high milk fat super rich intense flavored ice cream. Really good for if you want some major rich stuff. I've tried the different flavors a "few" times and I actually like it better than Ben and Jerry's. The strawberry was the best I've had in a long while.

One of my old stand by places is the Java Jolt, good latte, decent salads.

Jacksonville does have a few joints:
I haven't been to the Village Inn in many years, but they are still there and serve up country food. Roma's is still kicking too, never liked it much myself but, I think the pizza is the best bet there. The Coop Deville has good wings for take out. The mexican restaurants are OK, I like the new one best closer to town. I've had good pizza at Efina's but its pricey and the service has been up and down. I rather just go to Stevie B's for Americanized pizza in Gadsden.

I wish J'ville had a good diner with scratch made food. We have a few start up but they all were short lived. Everything lately has been from canned cooked to nothing crap full of MSG. I can get that at Huddle House...

I've eaten many a meal at the Village Inn and Roma's. Growing up in Oxford and attending JSU from '79 to '81, I have very fond memories of J'ville and the surrounding area.

I'll have to try the cupcake place when I come up for vintage weekend in October...
