Great report. I'm curious about the air box mod on the 610 (I have the same year). Wouldn't that make the bike even more vulnerable in water crossings? I've always thought the 610 is a great bike, but that low intake is a weak point

Day 10

We woke up early and were on the road by 7:30. We were greeted by this view.

And this on the other side of the road.

We got hit with a grand total of 4 raindrops.

We were looking at 150 miles of riding today. We actually had to zip up the jacket and close up the helmet as it was actually "cold" out this morning, it never got hot . I was not sweating at all even when I had to stop and clean the grasshopper kill off my helmet face shield.

We almost went farther because the weather was so nice and we got to the motel at noonish. But as we are both sick we figured that some rest would do both of us good. So we are planted in Boise City Oklahoma for the night. This post will be pretty short because it was flat with just a little bit of deep sand and that was it…

Here is the sand and green tumble weed.

Here is esp41 looking at the only hills we saw all day

esp41 was mesmerized by this photo.

What is that you are saying, you don’t see anything but a flat field? Let me zoom it in for you.

Yep that is a lone tree. The only one for miles around.

Well that is it for today. If you all have any questions feel free to serve them up and esp41 and I will answer them when we wake up from our nap.

The air box mod is very common. The stock airflow is very weak and chokes the motor. You are correct in your water crossing analysis. In stock configuration is will not allow a much deeper crossing. I figure anything over 2.5 feet deep and I will route around it. The carb boot sits very high behind the air cleaner and that helps a little.

Judging from your sig, you will make it. Hopefully the water crossings will be low enough for you to cross. I can't image how many people it would take to get a Harley unstuck from the mud

Flatness! I should have given you a heads up.

Can't blame you for the short report today. I wish I had tipped you off about the next 150 miles being very flat. You have just a few miles more of it but the Black Mesa Area and Long Canyon are coming up and should give you better scenery. Fuel up, it's a long stretch to Trinidad. Sorry to hear you are both under the weather. Hope you get to feeling better. Looking forward to more, more, more.

p.s. We charge for taking photos of that lone tree in this area. The bill is in the mail.

Day 11- Trinidad, CO ~150 miles

We started in Boise City. Town of Tinman:

And Dinosaur:

We were on the road by 7:30 am. It was actually chilly. After the last three days, the cool was a welcome change. We drove out of town on gravel roads. The landscape started out flat. Then we hit New Mexico.

Quite simply, we were stunned by the beauty. We are East Coasters and have never ridden in desert terrain. We actually slowed down and just enjoyed the cruise. Savor the following:

We saw a bunch of these guys running in the open. No place for them to hide.

Teaser alert! Kirkster has a video from here. Notice the helpful directional arrow.

The TAT in New Mexico is about 75 miles long. In too short a time, we were leaving New Mexico behind:

We entered Colorado. Branson to be precise. Branson is a tiny town, of maybe 60 people, that refuses to die. No gas. No food. Just a jail.

The Bransonites are friendly people. Unfortunately, Kirkster and I were talking on our comms’ and forgot to wave to a local. There is a price to pay for that mistake.

Onward we cruise:

We spent some miles riding parallel to these mountains. They seem to be telling us “Thou Shalt not Pass!”

Eventually we get to a low point and we climb up and over

We keep cruising:

We finally reach our destination

We gas up and on the way to the hotel, Kirkster’s rear tire decides to pick up a souvenir

This is starting to be a familiar sight

We are tucked into the Holiday Inn Express in Trinidad watching a thunderstorm. Hopefully the rain helps to put out the Colorado wildfires we have to traverse (or route around) tomorrow.

Yeah, we pushed it today. We are running on tires that need replaced and wanted to get close to our midpoint "tech" location. We will hit it tomorrow.

My Lynx fairing decided it did not like all the bouncing around, so it is cracking near the handlebar risers. I did a ROK strap bandaid and it appears to be holding up well. I do not think I will attempt to replace the dash before I get home. There is a ton of custom work involved and it take too much time getting one shipped from Canada.

I passed my illness to Kirkster, so he is now fighting a fever/flu/cold something. Not sure when he will get to todays riding post.

Tomorrow we work on the bikes and relax.
