Day12

Sorry, no post last night. I got into the hotel ungeared and collapsed on the bed. Out like a light. Esp41 got me some Alka-seltzer severe cold and flu, and some nyQuil. I took some Alka-seltzer and was back asleep, I woke up long enough to take a shot of NyQuil and 2 slices of Pizza that the Pizza fairy left on the night stand and was out again.

Woke up this morning feeling pretty good. So it is post time.

I feel like my back tire has some kind of big magnet in it as it keeps getting holed. Our tire situation made today a fun proposition. The knobbies on esp41’s bike are smooth to the tire carcass on the front tire, my bike has no rear knobbies left so anytime I cracked the throttle the rear end was squirming around. Today was slick and careful riding, we both managed to keep them upright.

As we left Trinity we came across this old mine site.

It seems there was a big mine explosion way back in 1917.

We also came across a large number of fixer upper homesteads. Quite a number of them are for sale. Who wants to build a TAT rest stop?

There were also plenty of big sky shots, like these.

There is a night and day difference between the eastern and western sections of the TAT. The scenery is just so different.

And the road from the mountain top.

We have missed the wild fires and there was no lingering smoke either. They did get very close to the road. It was weird how the trees burned but the bushes did not…

We have been very fortunate to have had thunderstorms the last couple of nights as that has knocked the dust down to nothing as you can see.

And past the old church, that even in my impaired state we did not skip.

We were rolling today and it looked for the most part as there were two motorcycles in front of us on the trail but we never caught up to them. We skipped the last section into Salida as I was done.

It turns out that route 50 from Cotopaxi parallels a nice river and the ride up on the pavement was quite nice. We will be going back down to Cotopaxi as that section of the trail looked quite nice and we don’t want to miss it.

Thanks for the updates. It has been fun following your adventures. It looks like you getting ready to hit some altitude. Can't wait to see the scenery and read more.

Ride safely and enjoy.

Just wait till you see the San Juan's, you'll never be the same.

That would be the Arkansas River and right now is peak whitewater season.

Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

Bodies are tired, but doing fine. They are getting used to what we are asking of them. We will probably stick with shorter days until these colds pass. We are actually taking an off day today. We were working on the bikes from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm yesterday (post will follow)

We took OTC aspirin, Excedrin, Motrin, and Aleve. We stopped at Walmart for the cold meds.

We take 3 liters of water with us every day. We drink between half to all of it every day.

No camping yet. Not against it, but a hot shower and AC are very nice things at the end of the day.

We are slowing down and enjoying the journey more. It keeps crashing to a minimum.

on the TAT you might want to increase your water intake.

~1 quart per hour (just under a liter for you metric types) during heavy exertion.

edit:

and dont forget to up your sodium intake as well.

enjoying the RR!

Tech Day 13- Buena Vista

We rolled about 25 miles north to Buena Vista to get work done to the bikes. We had a planned stop at Mountain Tech Yamaha/Beta owned by Sean. Sean had two bike lifts and we got right to it.

First off, here is what is left of the old tires:

New rubber for comparison:

Here is Kirkster’s KTM undergoing maintenance

His bike got new tires, an oil change, a cleaned air filter, a fuse replaced, new shock and fork springs, the left gas tank replaced and the GPS mount repaired.

Next up- the Husky; here is the exploded view

Sean helped us when he could, but he had new Beta’s (300 R’s- very sweet!) to sell and other customers to service. While Sean was busy with other customers, Kirkster and I were given free rein to work on the bikes.

My bike needed new tires, an oil change, rear brake fix, a cleaned air filter, a rad support bolt replacement, a rerouted gas tank vent tube and the Lynx fairing repaired.

Here you can see the crack in the Lynx fairing support

Here is the template for the aluminum backing plate for the Lynx

Sean made the backing plate and used epoxy and rivets to attach it. I removed the clear shield to lessen the wind pressure on the fairing.

The bikes are ready to go. We spent all day at Sean’s shop. A big thank you goes out to him for letting some travelling bikers get their bikes back up to speed.

Day 14 is rest and relax day. We are back in Salida and will continue tomorrow.

FYI: The 690e stock tires, the top rated Pirellie MT RallyCross DualSport tire, worked great on the TAT with more milage. They work very well both on and off road!

What's the story with what looks like a specialized ground control mtb tire that looks as though it's zip-tied to the "top tube" (mtb speak) to your frame? Is that a prospective patch?

Thanks for the updates. Continuing to enjoy the pics.

More mileage would have be great. Less roosting would help our Dunlop mileage. I may give them a chance next time, as we already are shod. Thanks for the tip.

That is there to provide extra support for the IMS tank. Ugly, but effective.
