around my way these old mines are full of old equipment (and stuff people threw in there). People have been known to dive in and never be seen again.

Battle Mountain to McDermitt- Day 23- ~140 miles

Well Day we left Battle Mountain around 8am and were promptly treated to more plains with goat tracks, ruts, and sugar sand.

We were immediately treated to another barbed wire fence gate, the first of many for the day.

There were lots and lots of plains in our future. We rode through miles of empty land that looked just like this.

Someone lost a large tub…

It was just sitting there so I could not resist taking a photo of the big red tub…

We soon came upon the dreaded water crossing at the abandoned ranch. I had seen photos and heard tales of this water crossing on many the report.

So we proceeded with caution, but to our great fortune it was dry and we were soon off the bikes taking some photos of the ranch.

Esp41 was contemplating cooking us up some grub on the stove.

Next up was the reservoir we would have driven by as we though we had 168 miles to travel today, but there was a road. Nice campground that was completely empty except for one camper. It is a pretty remote place for a campground that is for sure.

Esp41 finally got a good photo of a dust devil in action, he has a target painted on his back by the dust devil god. He has been hit by more than one.

Now that the danger has passed it was safe for me to cruise up the same bit of trail.

Our goat paths had turned to large loose rocks with multiple hill climbs, none difficult but you had to pick a good line and concentrate. If you tried to motor up and play with the roll chart bad things can happen.

Esp 41 got caught out and strayed from the trail a bit. He was pinned under the bike and I started back down the hill. Before I had made it too far he had managed to get his leg out and get the bike back on its feet. Since I was down the trail a bit I got him in action finishing the ascent.

Much of our day looked like this.

But we crested a pass and had to stop. It was a glorious view.

Both behind us.

And out in front of us.

The view was stunning.

I saw this vista and could not imagine why we had not seen a photo of a bike up there as it looked like an easy photo op.

Of course when I climbed up there I found out why that photo did not exist. Well at least not without a crane to place the bike up there...

The back of that vista was a cliff that nature had eroded a path through. Sigh.

The road down was wonderful compared to some of the ones in Colorado. Easy trip down, even for a Harley.

That was the last of today’s challenge and we were able to just cruise through the rest of the goat paths and sugar sand to the wonderful town of McDermitt.

Now to be fair to Esp41 and his crash today, he was just trying to even the score as I went down yesterday and redecorated the front of the Lynx Faring.

I also was finally able to mangle the Highway Dirtbikes handgaurd, It is bent down around an inch.

At least this wreck was not my fault. We got suck behind a US forest service truck that was putting up a lot of dust. No problems with this, but every time we went to pass the truck it would veer to the left and cut us off. We backed off for a while to not drive in the cloud of dust but eventually caught up as the truck was still going very slow.

The next time we went to pass I got unlucky in the dust cloud and caught a rut. I climbed the rut and got the handle bars straightened out just in time for it to suck me back in three times. The forth time I was so off balance that the rut got me and tossed me. I rolled off the bike and thanks to the Badlands Jacket and pants came through without a bump or bruise and managed not land on the fractured rib. Best part, the women driving the truck did not even stop even thought she braked after I went down. Our tax dollars a work.

The cell call

well as we are in the middle of nowhere my headset started quacking indicating that my cell phone was ringing. I clicked the answer button and was greated by the voice of Brokenhiplegarm. We had a 10 minute conversation and he could only not hear me when I went through a gully. We were an hour form the last town and 20 miles from the nearest highway which was another 20 miles from a "town". Technology is astounding at times.

Your earlier post about the bottom of the Lnyx cracking had me a little concerned so I started looking for small cracks on mine. All clear on mine. I think I now know the cause of the earlier problem

My lynx fairing is fine except for the beauty marks. ESP41 had the black plastic part of the dashboard which is the back of the lynx fairing crack right before where the dashboard bolts to the triple tree. So about an inch from the bolt holes the black plastic broke in two...

Day 24- McDermitt to Denio Jct ~66 miles

We have officially been on the road for one month (June 18th). That is a long time from home and I would like to thank the people covering for me at work and home while I am gone. I could not have made this trip of a lifetime without their support.

We knew we had a short run this morning, so we stayed in McDermitt and had a big breakfast. I asked Kirkster when he wanted to hit the trail and he just pointed to the casino/café sign

Tactically, we thought it best to stop in Denio Jct. Fort Bidwell is another 140 miles, then Lakeview is another 40 miles from Fort Bidwell. There is still no gas in Denio Jct and something tells me spring has past.

And we have been told there is no gas in Ft Bidwell. While Kirkster’s KTM could probably make the 250 miles between gas stops, my Husky can’t. The altitude is not helping my gas mileage (I did not rejet the carb for the higher altitude). Even if I carry an extra gallon of fuel, it leaves us no margin for navigation errors. So we planned to stop in Denio Jct, drive 20 miles to Fields to get gas, then go to Lakeview tomorrow. That is only 200 miles of fuel, which the KTM can easily make and my Husky will likely make. The extra gas we carry will be just that, extra.

As a side note to those following us on the TAT. There are only 6 rooms in Denio Jct. They fill up fast. Hunting Season runs from mid August to January and they book early.

Leaving McDermitt, we get this nice easy 10 mile road climbing into the mountains.

Then we get on two track dirt roads

With plenty of these

Here is Kirkster playing the “Little Train that Could”
I think I can
I think I can

I can!!! He pins it for the win.

The scenery starts to improve as we climb even higher

The roads are the other hand continued to get worse. Over 40 miles of heavily rutted two track, goat paths, loose rocky climbs, and lanes of three foot high grass where you could not even see the road. And just for fun, a water/mud hole of intermittent depth are thrown in here and there.

Overall, it was some great, challenging riding. Our work was rewarded

We passed through the Zimmerman ranch

There were at least 4 gates in ¾ of a mile to get through their ranch. They were not even home so we could not say "hi" and "thanks" for letting us pass by.

It’s amazing how many dirt road criss cross the nothingness areas of Nevada. It’s and off road vehicle paradise.

Here I am admiring another vista

Only to be topped by this one

Cruising into Denio Jct.

You know you have arrived at the right place when you see these landmarks
For Biker fans:

For Chevy fans

The people in Denio Jct are very TAT rider friendly. It is a great place to stop and have a bite to eat, or stay the night. Highly recommended.

The area between the Zimmerman Ranch and Denio junction seems to have some green colour to it. Last year it was a burnt out dust bowl.

Keep up the good work
