Pine Barrens...just how far South?

How far South do I have to get to start enjoying the Pine Barrens in NJ everyone is constantly posting awesome pictures of? I'm starting up in Newton, NJ and trying to determine if I can get away with a long day of fun on my Tenere.

Although I'm sure there are closer jump off points to you, I launch at the ranger station in Atsion on 308 just north of Hammonton.

The Pine Barrens is a huge area; over a million acres of trails and forest. It is an incredible dual-sport wonderland. I hope a scratch or two on the Tenere won't ruin your trip if you're new to sand riding. There's tons of it (some pretty deep) and it will be with you all day. At least it's soft.

Be wary of private land....Some is clearly marked, others not so much. Last month I had a local yahoo chase us 2 miles to scream at us for trespassing. I still have no idea wtf he was talking about.

Bad Picture!

It's pictures like this that give the people who want to keep us out of the woods evidence to use against us.

Haven't You seen the threads? Do you pay any attention at all to whats going on it the PB's?

First of all, all the roads in S. Jersey Pine Barrons are legal to ride on.
Repeat, all the roads in the Pine Barrons are legal to ride on with a registered plated motorcycle.
The area that your picture of your motorcycle is in, TYPICALLY would not be legal to ride so I ASSUME that you were in that area during a SANCTIONED event.
RIDING SINGLE TRACK IN THE PINES IS ILLEGAL WITHOUT PROPER PERMITTING.
SO that being said, if you were not on legal roads and buzzing around wherre you shouldn't be, then the local resident should be chasing you off his property if you were on it. I am sure you would chase the local off your property just as fast. Think ,,,,,,,, dont ruin the riding for everyone by not following the rules,,,, and then you call the local a yahoo???

Sorry, to my knowledge the area I was stuck in was in a legal area (wharton), and I would never trespass on purpose ..Picture removed...

I didn't mean to start a thread to argue. I'm just curious where I could enjoy a bit more "adventure" than I have been able to find in North Jersey.

I'm not too worried about setting her down in some sand. My Tenere wears crash bars, and they have already done battle with the concrete in the garage and emerged victorious!

While there may be a closer area the one that comes to my mind is Brendan Byrne State Forest which is off of Rte 70 & Rte. 72. There is a good amount of "legal" forest roads to ride which would be good for your Tenere. If you have any questions feel free to PM me and I'll certainly try to help.

Doug,

Which one is Jason? LOL

You still have that WR250? I've been thinking about adding one to the stable.

Pine Barrens road conditions?

How are all those legal roads thru that area for a street bike (DL1000 with stock tires)? I'm sure it's varied but is it a stupid idea to take my bike back there to find out for myself? I have zero dirt bike riding experience.

In the hands of an experienced rider a DL1000 in PB Sand is a Hand Full in and of itself.. Trust me I know I own one and ride it Off Road ALOT!!

My question..If you have ZERO Dirt Bike Experience why may I ask would you want to take a 500+lb bike into the SAND or "OFF ROAD"? Especially if your not setup to be there in the first place. (ie crash bars, bash plate, etc)

and you have Stock Tires to boot. Thats just a recipe for Disaster!! IMHO.. It can be done dont get me wrong.. but the results are usually Ugly!!

Are you just asking to trash yourself and your equipment? My advice .... Gain some basic experience of Riding Off Road. Go with others who have setup their equipment for off road riding. Try and attempt other terrain "Off Road" before attempting SAND!!! Even thou falling in sand vs gravel may sound more inviting .. Falling with a 500lb bike just isnt fun under any circumstance.

Just my 2 cents..

nonsense!

450+ pounds. fully loaded with jesses and camping gear. first time in the sand. first time at an event. meteor run 2010. this wasn't just PB sand; this was deep sand!

no one told me i should drop my boxes and gear. common sense wasn't working at the time! what an education! that was the first day i met sallydog. was going to stay and camp and ride day two. it got cold. and dark. and i had had enough sand! i went home! this was a section from a sanctioned event.

a year later and still haven't learnt a-thing! now it's mud instead of sand! this was no where near nj!

then it dawns on ya - you've been riding the wrong bike! upgrade! (and this was even further from nj!)

Come on Loph cut me some slack here. We all know your the exception!
A) there a big diff between your 800GS & Pig. I mean Big VStrom
B) you ain't running street tires
C) you ain't right in the head to begin with!

I'm all about getting more people out to ride with. Just don't want the guy to bite off more than he can chew. We want people to Enjoy their experiences not get so frustrated they sell their shit and never ride again!
