Light power issue

Bike 83 R100 RT convert to roadster

Rear tail lights were working. I installed new bulbs and cleaned the
housing.

Everything was working until a wire blew fuse in headlight.

Now everything is working except the tail light.

Brake light works when using the rear brake

Front brake engaged but now light

Changed out both fuses. Now power from the harness to the tail light.
Same harness shares the turn signal and brake lights.

Checked the connection in the headlight. All good. According to wiring dia they share the same fuse.

WHERE IS THE GREMLIN?

There's a two-pin connector under the gas tank for the front brake switch. Check that it is plugged in, etc.

Behind the keyboard? Pry off the "W" key with a butter knife. You won't miss it. I do this with my caps lock key.

Wires don't blow fuses. Shorts do that, or other overloads. Missing insulation on a wire so bare wire rubs on frame, etc.

Did you find this fault? It's location could be key to the other issues.

how is the ignition switch set up? Ditto the gauges and turn signals. I think those are the only electrical items you have to remove from the fairing. As a rule of thumb, these would be the first places to look for a fault.

Unplug the tail light harness and see if you have power at the gray wire. The plug is right where the rear frame bolts to the main frame on the left side.

Try changing out the tail light/stop light bulb (again, with a new bulb). Good luck!

Had power and then it fail for power again. I think there must be a relay that feeds power to fuse board.

Put a meter on #58 gray strip and there was no power to any of the area.

Power to the above in the green. Will change out fuses again just to make sure. WHICH relay allows power the board.

new development

Now I have power to the tail light on the parking light position.

Once click in to full ignition position the tail lights go off and power is lost to the gray black wire. Wire in the head light is double black / gray on the 3rd from the top position.

SCRATCHING my head .. looking for ans. Could it be ignition key switch?

The headlight relay provides power to the park circuit when the headlight is switched on. You'll find a grey lead on 87a or 87b.

instrument lights

A little more research. If the taillight circuit (bk/gray) powers the instrument lights. If those two light blow will they
affect the taillight. Are the lights needed to completing a circuit?

Opened up the speedo. Two dead blubs. Tach and speedo. Off to the store Monday for new ones.

No, any of the lights can 'blow' but leave the others operating. They operate in 'parallel' not 'serial'.

Is the headlight working? When the headlight works the instrument lights and tail light should be working.

Headlight is working. Pulled the instrument lights and they both are blown.

I have power to all lights. The problem is still when the igintion is on the on position the the tail light is not on. On the park position the tail light comes on. Will be picking up lights this morning and putting it back together.

give up

new blubs in instruments
new ignition switch
Still the same problem.. can't figure it out. Must be a open ground?
How can it be if the parking lights come on?

Usually the tail light and rear stop light share the same ground connection - thus a fault in that ground would effect both stop and tail light.

------------------------------------

AS I under stand it

The tail light works - from the ignition switch "park" position ?

The tail light does not work when the headlight is on?

The instrument lights don't work at all?

-------------------------
And other descriptions? You need to set it out in a logical manner - other wise we are all chasing our tails
