Bella Coola for Ursus Horribilis (Grizz that is)

Each fall I try and take one last trip before the summer draws to a close. Having considered going back to Death Valley or Moab again I opted for an unfamiliar destination and head north to Bella Coola in BC in search of Grizzlies and some scenery. I found both in spades. Had 11 days to basically screw off. Ride, stop, camp, hang out wherever, take pictures, etc., etc., with no set schedule. I figured, incorrectly, that the weather would cooperate till at least mid October. With a little research found that the salmon run was going on and Ursus Horribilis should be lined up at the buffet.

Had been pouring over some maps and found Bella Coola at the end of a long road to nowhere. Looked like the picture taking would suffice as well. We'll go ahead and get the first bear picture out of the way before we go any further. That's all anyone wants to really see anyway.

If the rest of the pics are as good as the first, this will be awesome.

Waiting for more. Let us know what route you took to get there. Been wanting to ride to Bella Coola for some time now. Your ride report will help me get of my ass and go! Seems like we work to damn much and not adventure that much. Thanks for the RR.

Did it by car with my wife last year. It was a very enjoyable trip. Would love it on a bike. The high Chilcotin plain would be a wonderful solitary trip, and the Frazer River before it is breath taking. We were there in August....no bears, so looking forward to some more pictures.

Uh oh....a problem. Hopefully, someone can help me out here. I've posted many pics to this site over the years but for some reason I cannot do so now. I have a SmugMug account and when I copy the picture from get a link and hit the image tab to paste I get nothing. Help! Damn computers. Soon as I can get this fixed I'll continue with some pics and verbage.

I can't you with your Smugmug/ADV problem, but if that first photo is anything to go by I'll be waiting around to see what happens when you have it fixed!

I was there last year in July...Hwy20 and Heckman Pass!!! A sow and two year old cubs right at the bottom of the "HILL" eating something. Stopped about 50ft from them but left the engine running. They were totally unconcerned by me.

Any big rocks in the middle of the road on the HILL???There was was quite a few going down and "fresher" ones when I went back up. That was more my concern when you look up and see where they just came from. And then look down and see where they could push you.

Nice pic....keep them coming.

Thumbs down

Looks like I've got the pictures posting thing figured out. After hitting the slab out of Bend I headed to Tacoma where I was going to stay for a two day visit with my girlfriend and watch one of the boys in a high school football game.

Pretty uneventful ride up other than dodging the cagers and texters on the Interstate from Portland to Tacoma. On the morning of my departure out of Tacoma I open the garage door to find rain and lots of it. Jumped on the slab and started pounding out the miles to cross over into Canada at Vancouver. Nothing worse than riding interstate in a driving rain. You inmates that live up there are hard core bikers. Every time I'm up this way it seems to be raining. Bike is a 2007 DL650 Strom w/accessories and a little over 30,000 miles on it. Great all around bike.

Saw a black bear in that same area but he was making tracks so no pics. I concur, I'd hate to have a slide while in that area. It's a long way to the bottom.
