First thumper... for a cheapo?

Trying to decide between a '88 kdx 200 for $450 and a '79 klx 250 for $350...

I want something to learn to ride dirt and sand, and will need to able to plate it most likely to get the most use. Any thoughts?

If anyone wants to sell me something, I work in north-jersey, live in central-j, and have family in south-j. Hopping across a border in any direction is ok. I do have access to a trailer for a pickup.

I dont really know anything about the KLX, but the KDX was pretty known for being one that runs forever. And its almost 10 years newer. I would go that route if that is the options.

it will a be good one for learning to rebuild suspension too. Which may be your first objective if it runs ok.

I don't know how hard it is to plate something in NJ but I would go KDX every time if those are the only 2 choices.

If you can find one of the watercooled ones they are even better.

Seriously though at that price point it's gonna be pretty slim pickins. Anything that you get is gonna need major work. I would wait awhile and save up some more $$. You don't want to be fighting mechanical trouble or a finicky bike on top of learning how to ride in the dirt as well. Plenty of serviceable dirt bikes once you get around the $1000 range.

I was thinking the more time, more money, more bike route. But then most of summer will go by without any woods riding. I'm going to go try and look at the kdx tomorrow.
