My wife likes the big screen on my iMac to watch Korean dramas on Dramafever.

Have a no brand Desktop running Mint 14 as my main desktop
A netop running Mint 14 as my video server
Another desktop running Mint 14 as my music server
Oh and a Sunfire 4800 in my equipment rack in the basement just using it for file serving
Oh and the work laptop ... running windows 7 Because they don't trust their employees.

Thinking of swapping out the netop for a WD personal cloud 3 or 6 TB server. Movie collection is getting a bit too big.

Anyone have any experience of Debian for the sparc architecture? Either that or maybe I'll repurpose the Sunfire as a media server .... hmmm that may work out fine

We have a similar set up. Lots of monitors looking at lots of things/computers. I have cases that are now nearly qualify as antiques that hold many times updated components, and even have some nearly as old CRT monitors because they are awesome mil-spec and dust proof (ie: expensive as hell when new).

But personally at home, all laptops on wireless.

These days, even "desktops" look like just a laptop monitor propped up on a stand.

On a desktop right now. Have a netbook that I only use when traveling. I don't do any gaming or video or even music.

At work I use an ancient desktop XP machine, connected to a CRT monitor that's as deep as it is wide . It's used for accounting only, not even connected to the interwebs so that we don't get viruses/malware or our accounting hacked.

nope, actually that was just after our redo and they were working, maybe exploring the new setup and systems. that is 4 computers running the 7 monitors, some were blacked out for security purposes.

I like laptops at home, but they don't seem to last like the desktops do, so I relegate myself to our home office when I need to surf the internet.

My bias is towards desktops. Easy to upgrade components and replace worn components.

My current 4 year old mini-tower upgrades:

added RAM
swapped out Video Card
swapped out CPU/heat sink & fan
added SSD

My desktop is an additional air filter for catching cat fur. Laptop just doesn't have the same capacity.

Sounds like you could have just bought a new one that had all the stuff you wanted.

I just had a new desktop custom built for work because I couldn't find an off the shelf one with Windows 7. Everything comes with Windows 8 these day and I don't want that. There is no manufacturer's bloatware on a custom built unit and the builder threw in several hardware upgrades and some software. Even at home I prefer to use my HP desktop rather than our laptop that my wife mostly uses.

I do both. I have a huge tower that I built myself and consider it to be my "main" machine. Tons of storage, multiple monitors, and I'd never not have one.

I do the laptop thing, and my Macbook Pro is quite capable, i7, 16gb, etc, and while I can go a year (and have) with just it, I still prefer a real computer.
