Bars rock

I like the bars, and have used them many times for they're intended purpose. I do think the Motechs are better because of the front connector bar which helps distribute the force to the other side. I've still had to "custom cold set", read bend, them after a crash. But that's to be expected.

No bars on my 950. The handle bars and lower fairing have taken most of the abuse going down on fast trails. This thing is wide enough for the tight New England trails. I have "dropped" the bike in the tight stuff right on the tanks/cf protectors and they don't really seem to care.

Tank Cracks

When I took mine off today there were stress cracks around the bolt holes at the bottom of the tanks. So I left them off and my tank is wonky. The bottom bolts don't match the holes and the petcocks are too low. wtf

I will put them back on at some point.

do you ride with crash bars?

Yup got cross rutted after a good rain and probably hit the ground at 30 km/ hr and slid to its resting place in the picture. Worked like a hot damn.

The cross-brace is not the main source of their strength - IMO its the much stouter bottom corner.
Illustrated in this thread with pics: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=460496 - I think when looking at the latest revisions, the HB and SWM were quite similar in design.
In short, the KTM ones are rubbish.

yes. lots of offroad spills and the occasional getting rear ended and totalling the bike. but the crash bars saved everything....other than the fancy orange paint.

I only had crash bars when I started. Crashed lightly once, saw a dent in my frame where the bars pinch/mount. Removed them.
Since, I have tested the tanks/covers with many crashes and spills and they have been ok so far so I don't seem to miss the bars.
I also like that the bike is skinnier on single track so I'm not clipping trees and rocks.

Not sure...

I crashed once on snow covered tarmac in about 50km/h with oem crashbars on and my left tank obtained a little crack around the lower bolt hole (thru which the bars are mounted). The bolt was bent by the impact and caused the tank to crack. I believe it was partially due to the low temperature (-5C or so), which could have effect on the plastic's fragility.

I guess this wouldn't happen without the bars on...

Im glad you are amused. I was also amused that this bike ran the 10th fastest lap time during my night stage at our recent 24hr. 10th out of 96 teams, all riding real dirt bikes isn't so bad.. Lights are a good thing.
