SF Bay Area to Astoria OR. Looking for some dirt/fire roads on the way..

We're leaving Petaluma on the 28 or 29 July, heading N to Astoria to be there NLT 31 July.

We're probably going up the 5 N to Salem or Portland and then hoping to find some fire/dirt roads to make our way over to the coast.

Any thoughts are where to start our search for dirt access in that area?

Looking at camping along the way. Any recommendations?

Cheers!

Personally I'd ride the coast, over I-5 any day of the week, buf if you gotta make miles....

One option - set your GPS to the little town of Carlton, Northwest of Salem. Take the NW Meadowlake Road/Nustucca Highway towards the coast (Paved twisties). When you get to Elk Creek Road, it's a dirt road that runs north into a maze of forest loggin roads and Trask Mountain OHV. But you better have a GPS and compass if you go that way. You can also try some of the dirt roads off of HWY 6 near Diamond Mill OHV and try to work your way over to the Nestucca River. Lots of little dirty roads around there and OHV riding that will allow you to slowly work your way to Astoria.

Also suggest the Benchmark Oregon Atlas or a good GPS in those thick coastal forests.

Good luck.

My bad, We're going to take 1/101 up to Grants Pass and THEN north on 5.

Well, it seems like a picture with the Cave Man is the first priority!
So it's Grants Pass to Astoria with a helping of dirt-
The same advice as above.
