ECU "locked" at factory?

Yo OC inmates-
Went to my local dealer to have the Akrapovic map installed this weekend to match my sexy new cans.... The tech explained he was unable to load the new map, and the service manager followed up yesterday saying that KTM says my factory settings are "locked" and my ECU needs to be sent to KTM to be flashed and then it can accept the Akrapovic map.
I know my purchasing dealer in NorCal had previously changed the maps for me (not the akra) without issue. New dealer says the Akra map adds beau coup at the low end, less at the high side, which is good by me...

Anyone else experienced this phenomenon? Appreciate the shared wisdom

Cheers,
Pascal

What year?

Sounds more like what you have to do if you own an Aprilia and don't have a Navigator.

Time to download Tune ECU, buy or build a cable and be done with the Stealership.

First time I have heard of this on a KTM. Are you confident in your dealer's abilities? Is this dealer prepared to temporarily swap your ECU with another bike to double-check? Sounds like their KTM diag tool may be at fault...

It's a 2008.....and its my first encounter with the dealership and they do not carry the KTM road line....so no other bike to swap the ECU

Need to do some recon on the tune boy....

Thanks!

If the previous map was changed by TuneBoy then yes the ECU will be locked to TuneBoy only I believe, but that is not anything to do with KTM.

If the bike is an 08 go the Tuneboy route, that way you can be in control of your own fate and make changes as needed to the map when ever you wanted.

And have a lot less money in your pocket, TuneECU would my preference, it's free.

Either one works (I did not dig into the details) I just know both will allow the user the ability to load and modify the fuel maps.

Talked to my mechanic in Santa Cruz this afternoon, says the St. Louis dealer is incorrect..no lock, no flash required.
I'll attribute the situation to inexperience on behalf of the new shop...

Sometimes stealers give you an answer to make you go away so they don't have to tell you the truth... Like the fact that they probably did not know how to load the ECU map or that their diag tool is borked or some such unspeakable offense. DIY man, you'll get better results!
