So I'm picking up a Ural tomorrow....

I haven't driven a hack for 30 years but have been want a Ural to see how I like it. I'm riding it home (about 300 miles) tomorrow. What do I need to know? It's a 98 Patrol with a 750 motor and running gear in it. I'm going to try to stick to back roads but want to get on the highway to see how it handles it. I've read a bunch here and know that 70 is about it, correct?

Do that in mph for long and you`ll be putting another engine in it at the weekend.
Better re-read what you thought you knew.

And basically just use it and look after it the way the book tells you...and enjoy.

I remember when I rode my Ural home for the first time. Mine was an '02 and I was nervous as heck. Take it slow and mind the cornering. Take it 10mph below posted if you are unsure. Eventually you'll get the hang of it. 55mph is your top speed and be aware of the drum braking. IIRC the speedo needle is basically straight up at this time.

Give yourself time to get slowed as well. It'll be a longer distance than you expect. It'll want to push to the left under braking so be ready for that. It'll pull to the right when you take off.

I would advise doing it solo too until you gain some confidence. They are so much fun and I miss mine quite a bit.

I thought the 750 motors were good for a little more speed?

Edit: I wasn't planning to use it for any extended highway running.

Thought you`d read it all and knew it all?

My 750`s done nearly 70mph a couple of times down a feckoff big hill but it`s not something I`d care to subject it to very often.

In normal use it`ll travel all day in a sweet spot between just under and just over 60mph ... and there`s still a bit left,just.

My 650 starts singing as it approaches 55mph and I won`t take it beyond that...so yes,you`re superficially correct in assumption but the 750 ain`t a 70mph traveller.

Furthermore,if your re-engined Ural is 750 engine on a 650 gearbox...you`ll defo not be doing 70mph.
And over here at least,the very first 750 boxes had lower gearing much like the 650 too.

But talking about speeds and Urals is irrelevant and tedious at best...it`s been done to death before and I hope this doesn`t degenerate into another 'mine does this...mine does that' yawnfest.

I wish I could take the mutt with me for the ride home tomorrow. He will be the first passenger on Saturday. I'm taking him to the beach on Ocrakoke.

Nice one mate...looks a good one and well sorted.

If you use it in heavy rain much and get misfiring and loud backfire popping,you`re certain to have water come in the top entry airbox.
My 750 suffers in heavy spray from that if I forget my rubber sheet 'rain shield'....likewise with water running off the bottom of the legshields and onto the HT caps (even with waterproof NGK caps) unless I fit rubber pieces as sprayguards.

Biggest thing remember no power brakes so no tail gating.
second full tank is good for 95 miles
third the delay factor takes longer to get anyway
fourth rest a few times on the way home (allows for showing of the bike)

70 mph? you're one those "glass is half full" guys huh? Some 750's will some won't, none of them like it. If you haven't been on a hack for 30 years I'd take it easy on the ride home before running your perceived abilities or the bikes unknown condition to the limits.

Change out the front brake cable to a KLR clutch cable..
