Laugh Kim & Mike's Most Excellent Unplanned European Adventure

Well we're going to head out this summer again in an attempt to have another most excellent adventure. This time everything is unplanned. Really.

Usually we plan (perhaps over plan) our little adventures, but that's not the case this time. Sometimes work gets in the way and other things suffer. In this case, it is the planning. So given the current situation, we have planned two whole things.
  1. Buy airfare to Barcelona
  2. Arrange for bikes there.
That's it. Nothing more. On the bright side, if you know everything up front, where's the adventure in that?

So without planning, our plan is to do the following:

Rent a couple of these...

And find some of these...

But not like these:

Like we said, we don't have a real route to follow but we can tell you that we are going to head north, then east, then south and lastly west. Some of the countries we'd like to visit specialize in certain things so during our little adventure we intend to try to get to countries that are famous for certain things.

First, we'll start here:

Then over to this place:

and they have these there too...

(I can't say that I'm looking forward to them...)

This looks more like my style...

then over to where these guys come from:

Then over to where these come from:

(No that's not Kim, she always wears ATGATT)

And where they have these too...

Then over to here where you don't dip, you soak!!!

They also have plenty of this...

and continue on to the place where they make these...

and probably the best

in the world.

Oh yeah, they're pretty famous for this stuff too...

(no that's not me, I always wear ATTGAT)

and then back from whence we came.

Most of this trip should be on pavement so we'll really miss the...

of our previous little adventures, but we are still psyched to be on a new one.

So if you're interested, come on along and see what kind of trouble we can get into.

Until later!

Only a few more hours until we depart.

Not having a plan is a good plan! I'll be along for the ride.

The Adventure has begun!

We are pleased to report that our little Unplanned European Wandering Adventure has well and truly started.

Most of us arrived safe and sound at the airport. Kim and I are safe and sound as well as my luggage and riding gear. Unfortunately, Kim's luggage and riding gear chose a different adventure and is somewhere between here and Boston. They are attempting to locate it and bring it to us ASAP. In the interim we wait like little kids. Pick us, pick us!!!

So the day wasn't totally lost, Kim and I had a little walking adventure today and got some good pictures of Barcelona. Will post shortly. If we're unlucky, we'll have another Barcelona walking adventure tomorrow. If we're lucky, we'll be in Andorra by the end of the day.

More soon!

Making the Best of No Riding? We can still have fun.

We pulled up into Madrid Barajas Airport and figured out our precise location.

Then it was into the terminal to rush to our next flight to Barcelona.

There were beautiful high ceilings, but they were a little short on the AC. Running to the next gate had us both soaking wet.

When we arrived at the gate, the gate agent told us that we would have to wait until the next flight because our baggage wouldn't make it to our plane on time. No worries we thought and she politely booked us on the next flight to Barcelona a half hour later.

The flight to Barcelona was easy and uneventful. We went to baggage claim to pick up our bags and stood at the conveyer waiting for our gear to arrive. An impatient horde waited with me as there were five flights on this conveyer belt.

About 15 minutes later, there was my bag, slowly making its way towards me. Excellent! However as time passed, there was no sign of Kim's baggage as I stood in an ever decreasing size crowd waiting for the bag to arrive.

About a half hour later, I stood at the conveyer belt almost alone but for the other 3 - 4 people whose bags didn't arrive.

There are no pictures of me waiting since pictures of men with steam rising from bald heads are not a pretty sight. Forlornly, I dragged my bag back to Kim and said, we need to go to lost baggage (as well as a lot of other expletives that I wont put in this report.

The nice person at the desk (everyone in Barcelona has been really, really nice) she had put the lost baggage in the system and that was all that she could do. She said most bags are found within 24 hours.

There was nothing left to do so I dragged the single bag to the taxi stand and we were whisked to our hotel happy to have arrived, but sad with the situation.

What to do, what to do?

We didn't want to lose a day just hanging around so we decided to take in some sights. We grabbed a bus to ride to Plaza de Cataluña. We must have really looked like tourists because people on the bus began pointing out sights to us.

Once we got off, it was clear we were in Europe, a place that has been around for thousands of years. Old buildings and new were mixed together in an interesting combination of new, old and ancient.

Check out the detail in this oversized hand carved door!

Narrow streets dating back to medieval times were not home to restaurants, stores and bars.

The architecture was amazing...

How about a close up of this building?

Those reliefs are actually carved into the masonry, not applied to it.

Checking out Plaza de Cataluna

We arrived at Plaza de Cataluña and walked around sampling the various statutes and fountains.

Some of the statuary were pretty cool and we should have taken the time to check out the stories behind them but we wanted to get in as much as we could. Perhaps someone local to Barcelona or Spain will let us know.

A lady on a Clydesdale holding up a ship. That's a bit different.

Not to be outdone, there was this...

A dude on the other side holding the Clydesdale while the lady holds the ship!

We then decided to walk our way back to the hotel and came upon some other modern but no less interesting buildings.

This one had a tree carved into the brick. The building had its own engraving!

On the way back, we stopped to check out the millions of scooters (and bikes) in the city. We found this example of a running everyday use Montessa.

We also went by the Arch de Triumph..

One of the details on the Arch...

We were getting hot and we decided to take in some of the local fare. Sidewalk cafes are everywhere, so we decided to partake of some of the local culture.

While we were there I spotted something I think I might ask her if she wants to do. You may know that her favorite color is purple. If it's purple it's lovely according to Kim.

So over Kim's shoulder I spotted...

Yes indeed, that is truly a full head of purple hair. Whaddaya think Kim?

Evening comes...

By the time we arrived back at the hotel, we were toast. Hot and sweaty, we dropped into the rack for a couple of hours shuteye. Somewhat refreshed, we decided it was time for dinner 20:30 local time and we headed out onto the streets once again to find a sidewalk café.

It didn't take long and we found this...

We plunked ourselves down at one of the sidewalk tables and order some refreshment...

Before we knew it, it was time for UNA MAS POR FAVOR!!!

Ultimately, we did order dinner and we scarfed down some pasta and salad. By the time we were done, we wobbled our way back to the hotel for the night. So if you RR seems a little strange, perhaps we shouldn't have had Una Mas pitcher of Sangria. Oh well, someone has to do it.

We that's it until we find out what tomorrow (and hopefully the airline) brings.

Until later!
