Beaches to Hill Country - East Coast NZ

A few pics from the weekend's ride out to have a few beers with the boys in the back country. An invite out to Journey's end station coincided with a nice fine winter weekend so the 640 was the weapon of choice for the trip over.

Stopped to check out Waiotahi beach on the way.

It's about a 3hr ride but there aren't really any boring bits between my place & the station. After the scenic cruise along the coast & a great pie at the hot bread shop in Opotiki was 50km of almost traffic free twisty goodness on hwy 2 through the Waioeka gorge.

I turn off the highway after descending from the Waioeka summit & head further into the hills.

The road ends, I continue on the farm track up the hill to Sunny Face Lodge, my friend's hunting hut. Malcolm & the guys are already well into sorting out a few of the worlds problems over an ale or 3

Offroad toys. We has them.

It's a real nice evening up on the hill.

After a mighty fine meal of low food miles lamb we gave the rum bottle a bit of a nudge.

It was a fairly leisurely start the next morning but eventually I rolled back out down the valley.

I decided to loop home via the old Motu road to take in a bit more gravel.

Then a peek at the beach at Tirohanga

A most enjoyable weekend.
Clint

Great riding in N.Z mate you should appreciate it as the roads are premo!
Classic NZ photos around the camp fire and makes me miss home a bit.

Just past the Karekare Station woolshed on Koranga Valley Rd . There's a lot of nice backroads in that area. If you want to tour through on the scenic route get in touch & I'll give you a few pointers. My midwinter ride goes through close to there so I have a routesheet & gps tracks on hand for Waikaremoana - Matawai taking in as much gravel as possible.

Sunny Face Lodge is available for accomodation too if you are travelling in the area. Access for big adv bikes would be dry conditions only but they have quads/4x4s on hand to ferry you up the hill if you get unlucky with the weather.

Cheers
Clint

Thanks Clint.

I thought the country side looked similar to parts of the motu.

I'll go and look around when I come over at the end of the year we have a day or two to look around those parts, we are staying at Lakes Lodge Okataina and the plan was to do a motu loop, on one of the days I'll tack on a few of the roads around there.

Cool, keep us posted. My place is about a 5min ride from Okataina so we should catch up for a ride/beer/BBQ while you are here.

Cheers
Clint
