Yup, I figured it was time since I finally started riding out here. We did a ride to Lac Rose today. It's where they used to end the Dakar Rally. I'll post a couple pics later. Larry let me use his GoPro chest rig and I got a decent clip riding some whoops that I'll post as well.

Hey Kev,
Sand does suck and we found some more today. Not as bad as the beach though. I wish I were back there with you guys right now. I hear you are having some great weather. It's hot as hell here and the humidity is up there as well.

Lac Rose

Larry and I rode to Lac Rose (Lake Retba) this morning. It's where they used to finish the Dakar Rally. It wasn't pink yet and won't turn for another couple months.

The "Pink Lake" used to be the finish to the Dakar Rally. Now it's just a tourist stop. Algae makes it pink but not until the rainy season stops and it starts to get more salty. They harvest salt from the bottom and they do it by hand. We stopped and talked to this guy about it and even though he didn't speak English and I don't speak French, I'm pretty sure this is what he said:

The lake is about 3 meters deep where they get the salt. They take their boats out, tie them off to a pole, put on a pair of metal stilts with flip flops bungied to the top and sink a basket with a rope attached to it. They use a very long shovel to scoop stuff into the basket and they bring it up, sift it and dump it into the boat. Repeat.

Then again, I may just be talking out of my ass! Hey, I told you I don't speak French. Except for the stilts, basket and shovel part. He showed me those and you can see part of a stilt sticking out of these boats.

Salt piles

We took the toll road to get out of Dakar and then turned off to find some dirt. We knew which direction we generally wanted to go and after a dead end road or two we found this one. You can just barely here me laugh when I saw the whoops coming!

With all that sand, you'll own the Barstow to Vegas race when you get back
