Bummer that you are missing out on the 40 mph winds and temps in the 20s.

I bet Jack got a few inches last night.

Oh yeah Scotty, I'm really missing the snow right now!
Here's one for you from New Year's Eve. The Senegalese clearly don't have the same safety concerns as Americans when it comes to fireworks. We liked to call these "Babies arm holding an apple".

And the wife walked out of N'Gor restaurant the other day and heard a weird noise from the turtle enclosure………
As soon as she showed me the video I thought, "Oh hell yeah, those FF's will love this one!" You just never know what you will see in Dakar. Clicky
Happy New Year!!!!!

Shit, that's damn near hot!

It was 6 degrees at 0630 this morning.

It got all the way up to 14 and right now it's back down to 11.

Oh yeah, we have the wind too.

Sorry to hear that Mike. I've been following the news back there and it looks like its going to be crazy cold for a while. I hope you are all by a roaring fireplace with a glass of something tasty in hand.

It hit 32 about 10 minutes ago. Supposed to be warmish (30s) for a couple of days and then back into the teens. The odd thing is that I can drive 2 miles (about .7 as the crow flies) and it'll be 3 to 5 degrees warmer.

Good report.

Have you got a photo where the pannier rack brace mounts under the rear guard - number plate please?

Cheers

Trev,
I don't have one right now but I'll take one for you tomorrow. I just drilled into the plastic and then used some clamps to tie it all together.

Africa Eco Race

Before we moved to Senegal I knew that the Paris-Dakar Rally had been cancelled in 2008 for security reasons and moved to South America in 2009. It's been there ever since. The security situation doesn't appear to be improving on this side of the pond and the Rally seems to be doing really well down in Argentina, so as much as I would like to see it back in Senegal, I doubt it will happen any time soon.

So imagine my surprise when I saw one of these driving down Rue de Almadies in Dakar on Saturday

And then we saw one of these go by

So I flipped a quick u-turn and followed them to the King Fahd hotel. I didn't have time to check out what was going on but they had a banner on the fence so I checked out the website

http://www.africarace.com/en

It seems that I'm not the only one that isn't happy about the Dakar Rally not finishing in Dakar. Although the route is now run down the coast instead of inland in a few of the more dangerous countries, it still starts in Europe, goes through Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania and finishes in Dakar.

I wish they would have advertised it a bit more. We had no idea they were coming to town. The race finished at Lac Rose (the traditional Dakar Rally Raid finish) on Saturday afternoon and we saw the trucks and cars going by early Saturday evening.

So, after going to dinner to celebrate Mrs. 34's birthday (she turned 29 AGAIN :loll) we went back to the King Fahd to see if any of the racers were still drinking. It was pretty mellow at the hotel but we did see a sign with departure times for Sunday morning so I called the boys and we met the following morning to check out the bikes, cars and trucks before they left for the port.

And this is what we saw

I talked to the guy riding this bike for a while. He had a run in with a trailer early on, busted up the fairing and lights, poked a hole in the front left tank, had clutch issues later in the race and broke two chains because of it, missed two stages but eventually got it back together to finish the rest of the race.

Support trucks

Looks like a support truck…………

But it's not

A real support truck

The wife liked this one

This one was diesel powered

The "I don't have a million dollar sponsorship but I still want to race class"

And finally, Pete feeling a bit inadequate about his Hilux afterwards

Nope. I just put it there to tie it all together. I had heard that the plate mount flexed a lot in rough terrain so I did it as a precaution.
