2 stroke parts availability

I have a 1977 2 stroke Puch moped, and an '09 2 stroke Stella scooter. I would like to get a 2 stroke motorcycle. I realize that there are not likely very many parts available for old 2 stroke street bikes (which would be my first choice) but what about 2 stroke dual sports? It doesn't even have to be a vintage bike, I have thought about making a dual sport out of a 2 stroke dirt bike. Such conversions are fairly easy in my area, but could not be done with 2 strokes until very recently, with the demise of emissions testing for all street legal bikes. Is there a 2 stroke dirt bike that would make a decent dual sport? Could an MX bike be detuned and given a heavier flywheel? Right now I am pretty much open to anything that will let me put a 2 stroke motorcycle on the road, and be repairable.

I think this sounds like a fun idea, and I'm curious to see what you come up with. I think a huge part of your eventual choice of bike should have to do with what you'll be asking it to do. A converted MX may be a miserable nightmare if you spend a lot of time on the slab. But I'm sure you realize that type of thing.

I think a Yamaha DT400 seems like it could be a great all-purpose ride. Already legal. Auto-lube. They seem hell-for-stout, and I believe parts are not hard to come by.

I hope you'll let us know how it all plays out.

Good luck on your quest!

Your thoughts are incorrect, you can get most parts for alot of models!

You would be surprised at how many parts are available for 70's 2 stroke bikes - as long as you stay away from Kawasaki Triples! They'll have you searching for along time and then leave you poor.

If you were inclined to mostly road use, then a Yamaha RD400 is a great bike for short trips.

If you were thinking of longer trips perhaps a Suzuki T500 or 750 Water Buffalo.

You want to restore the Puch Moped ??? If so that's fantastic and they are very aftersaught too!

Puch parts especially for the engines are available, you might look up
Puch owner Forums for details.

To the Stella ... (I have no idea but I'am not so interested in scooters).
