I traded bikes with a guy for part of ride. He had a SV1000s. It was an absolute blast. Got me thinking that I needed a new bike. I wanted a Vtwin for the power delivery, sound, and overall thin feel.

There is a naked SV1000 for sale on C-list in Colorado right now: http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/3892620817.html

Or keep on the lookout for a Superduke or Tuono. More money, but probably better bikes.

I'm really liking the SV. I already have an FJR and thinking 2 I-4's is one too many. Tell me more about your SV duckman, how is the stock suspension compared to other Japanese bikes you've had?

Nobody buy that one from the link posted above! I'm taking a trip to California tomorrow and can't buy it until I get back!

i'll tell you the first thing that comes to mind is that the sv engine starts to sing just over 2500 rpm and my old gsx somewhere around 7-8000. i've owned 4 sohc 4 cylinder hondas a kz1000 and then i got a ducati monster and a dl1000.both 90 deg. v twins and very different but both great fun. i don't see myself buying another 4 cylinder bike.

I used to own an SV1000S, that I converted to a naked (N). I spent a bundle on her ($4400!) and the only negative complaint I had was comfort. I just couldn't find a reasonable way to improve the ergos! The motor was a gem (**bullet-proof**), and she was the 2nd best sounding motorcycle I ever owned. Instant power from 2000 rpm, and she had a decent top end to.

I bought an '03 SV1K naked new and loved it. Not as much as my previous SV650 naked, but the engine made up for a lot. A set of Gen-Mar bar backs raised and brought the bars back. A set of Buell foot pegs dropped them down for more legroom. A shifter setup from an SV650 was like a short shift kit. The changes produced were huge, and totally changed the ergos.

The engine on that bike was killer, power everywhere, no waiting like a 4cyl to spool up. I had a set of Yosh CF street cans on it which sounded throaty, not too loud.

As previously mentioned, the one drawback, which was enough for me to sell it, was the horrible seat. I tried lots of fixes, and none really worked for me. I couldn't stay on it for more than an hour or two, with lots of pain near the end of the ride.

If you can stand the seat, buy it.

The stock seat on the SV1000 is bad, the factory gel replacement is better, but gets hot in the sun and holds the heat!? I have a custom seat on mine and you sould figure that into the price, but it is still a great value bike!

And also not mentioned is the easy maintenance! Valve adjustments are 16k and the cams are gear driven, so you just unbolt them and lift them off without ever having to mess with the timing or chain! Easier than my single cylinder dirt bike!

So just for fun I test rode a Speed 1050. Wicked motor, and unreal brakes. It's the only one in my price range I could see myself not wanting to re-build the suspension so the $5700 I'm looking at isn't too bad. Kind of sledgehammerish thought and didn't turn as nicely as the 675.

So, SV1000 or Street triple or maybe Speed triple? Any Triumph is gonna cost a lot more than an SV and it's unlikely I'll be able to test ride an SV. Do they have that grin factor I'm loving on the Triumphs? I did have a Superhawk that I didn't like at first because all I knew was I-4's but it eventually grew on me and I only sold it because my car got better mileage and the range was a joke. I do miss the V-twin though!

The Superhawk and SV1 are pretty similar power wise however my SV always got good mileage on backroads/freeway. 47-52. I could get it down in the high 30's if I rode like a complete idiot in town. Range is right around 120-150 miles for me and I don't push the tank capacity at all.

Between the SV and the SpeedTrip, Damn. I would say go with the Triumph because of the ergos if nothing else.

If the unfaired version of the SV wasn't available it would be a Triumph for sure. The non-S SV model and the Triumph seem very similar ergo-wise

I've owned both a 919 and SV1000n, albeit for short times. Someone else mentioned 919 behaves like a vtwin, and that's the truth - it pulls about as hard as the SV from idle up and felt every bit as quick as the SV. Stock suspension and seats suck on both as usual. The 919 under seat exhaust will make your jacket reek from the fumes - a 4-1 system is the only cure (that I could find anyway). Might want to add the z1000 to your list.

I believe it, that's a shame about the exhaust though. It would kill me to put money into the exhaust when I'd so much rather do the suspension.

Aren't those Z1000 buzzy bastards? I guess it wouldn't matter so much since I'd rarely use it on the highway.

Here's my SVS in touring mode, at Gateway CO...


I drilled the top triple clamp and added a superbike bend handlebar. Instead of going the Buell footpeg route (tried it before, didn't like how it splayed my feet out), I exchanged the stock footpeg brackets for ones from a 2nd gen SV650n. This moved the pegs an inch forward and an inch down while keeping the feet tucked in.

The seat is OK for me. On this 3 day trip all around Colorado, I sat on an Alaska Leathers sheepskin - helped a great deal, for sure.

The sound the SV makes with those Yosh slip-ons is fantastic, especially at start-up. Just so bold and deep, without being (overly) obnoxious. The suspension is so-so but can certainly be improved. Overall, I slightly prefer my old SV650s' better handling (aftermarket suspension) and especially lighter weight over the SV1000s' increase in power.

Now, given a choice between the Triumphs triples and the SV, I'd probably go Street-Speed-SV, in about that order. (I'd take a Daytona 675 over all of them if I could figure out a way to make it semi-comfortable...) That's based on some test rides of the triples, not long-term exposure. However, I bought my SV for 2500 so if cost plays into things it's a fine choice.
