Seattle to SLC – U-State Football road trip

Going to ride my rehabilitated 94 Connie from Kent WA, near Seattle to Salt Lake to watch my up and coming Utah State Aggies put a whooping on the Mighty Pac 12 Utes. First ride report and multi-day trip.

The bike: Bought a 94 that would not run and needed TLC. 18 months later, and lots of learning opportunities, it has passed several road tests, so it off on a 2,500 mile trip. Bike was purchased for $500 and I have put $600 in needed parts and carb work, plus another $300 in farkles so it is an under $1,500 bike. Unknown (high) miles, road rashed fairings and mufflers but rebuilt carbs, lots of new seals, bearings and adjustments and ready to rock.

The trip: Instead of a 850 mile slab ride, it is mapped out to be 1200 miles with little to no slab. High Spots: Rainier, Adams, Columbia River, John Day, Banks, Stanley, Id Falls, Bear Lake, Logan…… Leave 8/26ish, return 9/3ish. Gear for comfort and protection, food to eat and gear to camp. All set.

As departure nears, I put in a bolt for the bottom fairing last night that was too long, it fractured my coolant overflow bottle. A fellow Connie rider comes through with one from his parts bike. Just need to pack and figure out how to attach my USU flag.

Success- 2,500 trouble and incident free miles (Oh yeah, my mechanic on my 20 year old Connie is amazing!!) :)

Lots of time to put together a "story" in my mind.

Not much for writing windy comments.

Summary thought/words

Can you say scenic byways? Only 250 miles of slab the whole route.

Preparation pays, AGGAT even in the heat, extra caution when solo...

Smells: Spruce, Sage, fresh cut alfalfa, freshly watered fields, road kill, silage, milk farms, Hops, belching diesel smoke,...

Murals, Deer, Elk. Bald Eagles, hawks, cows, goats, sheep, stupid drivers, Hornets in helmet, freeze dried food, hammock for first time, tiny bit of rain, base jumpers, sunburn....

Too many curves, Not really. Favorite roads

WA 410, 12, 97
OR 218, 19, some of 26
ID 55(bottom), Lowman-banks, top of 21
UT 167, N. Ogden pass
Bottom of 21, Lowman-banks again, top of 55, 71 to Hells canyon
WA 12, 123, Sunrise road up Rainier, 410

A few pics.
