U.S.F.S. Adventure Passes going away?

Don't know if this is a good thing or not. I don't purchase one when I ride, because I don't park, although as a rule, I don't approve of paying for things 'owned' by the people. However, I think the $5 passes may deter extra traffic in areas that can be bumper to bumper on weekends(especially up Hwy 39 and the East Fork)

Its a good thing. When the USFS started charging this they told the people this would only be something like two years. Around 18 years later its about time.

Yup. As both a hiker and rider using the Los Padres, I have objected to this program since it's inception. I think I have ALREADY paid for using the National Forest by paying my federal income taxes, thank you very much! What the heck has the Gubmint been doing with THOSE funds?

And the Feds get millions every year from CA Green Sticker fund to provide OHV access. Triple fees if you ask me.

I've been camping every year for the past 35 years in the Los Padres Ntnl
forest down in Big Sur.

To date I've never purchased an Adventure pass.

To date, no ranger has ever found me to ask me for one.

I feel the same way about beach parking too, but I doubt that will ever go away.

Most beaches in California are state or county, so yeah, cold day in hell.

The notion of paying government for something that exists outside its scope is ridiculous.

The forest was there before FedGuv. It'll be there after FedGuv is long gone and bankrupt and some new government (or none) replaces it.

Usage fees on unimproved raw land is nothing more than blatant usury.

That forest may not be there if the Federal Government sells off the land to a developer, oil company or other.
The Adventure Pass is the one tax I didn't mind paying. The annual price works out to 8 cents/day. A small to price to protect nature.

Oh and, usury, it doesn't mean what you think it means.

Like I said, I'm not sure if it's a good thing or not. It's not expensive, and it might keep some of the traffic at home instead of clogging some of the best motorcycling roads in SoCal. But I also look at it as a 'toll' to visit public lands. What was it, 10 years ao when the BLM put up a kiosk and started charging $10 to ride on El Mirage? Yes, its' kept some of the riff-raff out, but I miss the days when it was free.

a couple of years ago, a local guy sued the usfs because of the red rock parking fee in the sedona az area. he won. they now are only able to collect a fee if you park in a developed site...and that's a bit shaky. i never cared, i had the old guy pass.
