A couple hours droning across the central valley has me at the gateway to adventure in the southern Sierras

Rancheria Road

Sad to say I didn't stop much to smell flowers or take happy snaps, but the clouds on the horizon and the wind kicking up had my concern

I have never seen clouds like these before, they looked molten

It got dark quick and then it began to rain, the temps went from 80 to 35 in a matter of 30 minutes. I was alone on a dirt road that was turning to mud and I wasn't exactly sure where this road came out and when it came out Good times

Red skies at night Sailor's delight...well I am a sailor and these clouds did not bring much delight to me tonight, perhaps it meant good weather tomorrow, but right now it looked like the apocalypse had arrived

Down off the mountain and into Kern River Valley the temps improved, the wind died down and it was smooth sailing

Camp the morning after

Up and at em early

Trying to get a jump on the thermostat, it gets turned way during the summer in Kern Valley. It will easily top 100 here today

Altitude is the cure for the heat

We headed up Sherman Pass Road, but we were greeted by a locked gate

Website said the pass was open

Talked with lady at office sometime after this and she said "You should always call, we don't even know how to update that site. We ain't no webmasters"

Well, it was still good and early. I hadn't explored 22s12 that was just to the right of the locked gate. I put Route 178 into the GPS to get me to the other side of the Sierras and I was pleasantly surprised that it was showing a way to get through via this unexplored road I was sitting at

Away we go...off to my right the clouds were pushing fast over the mountains and the breeze was turning to gust

Quick stop to drain some coffee and check out this camp

Don't know if I would boil the water for 5 minutes or 5 hours before drinking with a name like that

Critter checking me out, don't worry I ain't staying

But it is a dry heat.
It was 108 F the week before last. I like I there but the wind will suck you dry.

Dirt riding and heading toward a shortcut to 178 I came upon a really big meadow

Later I figured through a map study it is aptly named Big Meadow

Of course the pictures don't do it justice, but this meadow is easily three miles long and two miles wide, has a small creek flowing through the middle of it too

Love the high altitude meadows, very peaceful, I would come back and camp on the edge of this one a few weeks later with wife and daughter

Roads were good back here with plenty of side spurs to explore later and even some single track for the pedal bike with Cannel Trail

Well, I went and went. The GyPSy wanted me to take a left down a small two track trail that was unmarked. I obeyed. It's an adventure after all, but I only made it a quarter mile or so and the trail faded out, as it was taken back by the forest. I turned back and continued south and the GyPSy started a new route...this time it was a marked trail, but not marked for me and my motor...it was mountain bikes and foot traffic only...I checked the map at this point and saw it was useless, although fun, to try to get this route through. So, back I went

With my belly grumbling I headed back out of Cherry Hill Road toward the civilized world, had my sights set on a bacon cheese burger on the way to town..but first I had to make a wrong turn which led me to this cool little cabin!!

Cannel Meadow Cabin

Owned by the Forest Service

Not a bad view off the front porch

My steed awaits

Now, on the way out and still about twenty miles from a paved road I run into these two

They were from Denmark on rented Harleys and they were following their GyPSy too I told them there was no way, but they didn't like that at all. I told them to go ahead and try it, but it's a goat trail

I asked if I could take their picture and they said "Sure, but don't tell anyone about this"

Down off the mountain and into the river valley I had to stop for my bacon cheezburger I was hungry like a hostage at this point

Hope it lives up to the name for all the right reasons

OK...here goes

It was great and it really hit the spot...it was late afternoon by this time and I still had a bit to go till camp

Where the hell am I camping anyhow? Well, I always wanted to stay in Alabama Hills and I figured it was warm enough I could forgoe the rain fly to see all the stars...

Remember at the beginning of this day trip anthology I mentioned I didn't plan much for trips like this and it bites me in the ass every now and then, well this is a good example of when it does.

I never even checked the weather before I left the house; I always packed for a bit of all conditions, but this time I was very unprepared for the invisible force of wind.

Made it to Alabama Hills and it was blowing a constant 40mph out of the east.

Still set the tent and it was quite the challenge

My hair is gray and white y'all..notice in the video it is brown due all the dust in the air I still layed down in the tent for a bit to try and get a little rest. It was a dust storm in the there and the rain fly was tearing due to the wind.

Made the decision to ride into town to gte reception and check the weather. Well, it was only going to get worse winds were suppose to kick up to 60mph with gust to 80mph overnite....nope, pack it in, get the room

Here is my hasty packjob strapped the tent and boots to the outside, stuffed everything else into the panniers

Camp for the night at $59.99

I still ate my camp food

Wind howled all night and I was thankful I wasn't in it

Next day I was up and at it early to get the fudge out there

Opened her up and pointed her toward the stable

Not a bad sight to wake up to

It's Friday morning and I am in Alabama Hills..second try went much better No wind, nice temps, slept with rain fly off and star gazed for a bit till drifting off...

Let me rewind to the day before and about the only shots I took the day before

Chicken Fried Steak with smashed taters and fried corn on the cob

After fighting traffic to get out of the city and jamming through the desert this really hit the spot.

We had a pretty nice campspot with great views

My partner in crime is moe.ron on this one

Whitney from my tent

Mornin came and it was clear skies..temps were already climbing

Whitney was still there

A very alien landscape, intriguing to say the least

Some resforesting of native plants around the monument

I tried to recreate one of the ADV front page photos

From here it was fuel, fat pills and get north to meet Paul and AKJeff

Excellent as always... .... we have a tentative plan to do Sherman Pass and Alabama Hills next month. Any indication as to why Sherman was closed??

Thanks

Since I am quite far behind on the reporting it doesn't make sense to say seasonal closure, but that's what it was. They had not opened the pass from the winter clean up. Best to call Sequoia NF before you go to check on the condition of the pass.
