Well that trip didn't happen. Pakistanis started kidnapping/killing tourists again and Nepal declared martial law. Just my luck.

Agreed on all the comments pretty much, however some clarity needed. The plan was an overnight ferry to Bandar Abbas. A complete shit hole, but from Dubai, one of the few options other than to NW India and then up to Nepal. Not a good option if anyone has read Chris Scotts Adventure Motorcycling Handbook (excellent/must read). Apparently customs into India is like masturbating with a cheesegrater.......slightly amusing to watch, mostly painful and will take forever to get off!!!

Anyway, I've toured most of Iran before on my Moto Guzzi 1000S (and yes it is spell bounding and the people are WONDERFUL contrary to the bullshit in the media about Iran.....remember there is a difference between the politicians and the people). So this time the intent was to scoot straight across from Bandar Abbas to southern Pakistan (short run really) and then get north as fast as possible due to the regular hijacking of bikes by drug runners (option to freight/train the bike depending on the road condition, political etc...). Then enjoy the tour at a PROPER pace from the north of Pakistan to Nepal. Return wise, contingency planning was to use the really reliable rail back for the same bits mentioned before....not really a great plan, but none the less a plan.

Unfortunately the issues in Kashmir are still a little concern nowadays, so the route is either via China or via India for a short stretch and then Nepal.

The short version is that this dream trip is now yet another year away, so plenty of time to do some more planning:-( .............and build up some more leave to make it an 8 week trip!!!

B.

Damn! Politics gets in the way of life yet again...

Sorry to hear about your logistical nightmares, but it seems you head is screwed on the right way. A big roger on the people vs. politics and I would add the failure of media to clarify that divide (or they likely aggrivate it). We don't even hear about Pakistan's nightmares here in the USA, likely because they are an "ally".

If you can't go into Kashmir, then get Rushdie's new book, Shalimar the Clown. I am reading it now; its about Rushdie's birthplace, Kashmir, and might help salve your wounded trip a bit.

Do you know of the headaches of driving into China? Might make India seem idillyic by comparison. Something about fees, especially having to pay for an escort car and driver to show you where you can go and what you can do Just an FYI.

I though Martial law was declared 10 months ago?

Nepal: All communication links were cut after the King Gyanendra's announcement of suspending parliament and fundamental rights, on Tuesday, 1st of february.
Airlinks have been closed, roads blocked, other transport links delayed. Armed security forces in riot gear are deployed. Leaders of major political parties, trade unions and student organisations are under house arrest or detained. Army is stationed in the editorial offices of all national dailies in order to censor. Outside of Kathmandu, the Maoist strike is apparently observed

Whoa! I didn't think the KTM comfort seat fitted the Adventure?? I thought it only went o nthe Enduro cos of the different tank?

This sounds good...I was going to order a standard 2003 adventure seat for my 1999 knowing that theyre "better"...but this sounds much more like it.

Anyone got a part number please?

Ace, potential comfort! - Mat

there are half a dozen online parts dealers for KTMs, just search for "ktm parts" and then use their online parts fiche.
