08-01-13: Trnsmission is on it's way

So here we are Burns Lake Canada.

We would not be in such a good position if were not for the kindness of strangers, the rig sits at David's house, all taken apart and wrapped up against the elements. The transmission removed and on it's way to be fixed, we found out today that there is NO overnight to the USA from this town... It's on the fastest / reasonably priced option we could find...

Tomorrow we fish ;-)

Sounds like with all of these break downs and parts failures you might want to take the advice you were given from the guy who taught you how to ride a sidecar or start looking for a Toyota truck to finish the trip in

Catchup and Burns Lake

Quick catchup in photos;

Getting the transmission out of the bike

Our hosts David and Mya

At the post office, all packed up and ready to go

What does one do while in a small town for a few weeks?

We cooked simple meals

Watched the rain

Hiking

The dogs decided to come with, nothing we could say or do would change their minds. We know Mya, but the 2nd dog just joined in the procession.

They were the smart ones, turning around half way up the first hill

Fishing

Small fish but very fun on my small outfit.

Watching the amazing sunsets

and catching up on bad TV. All in all not to bad... We really are ready to move on ;-) today has been marked a day of rest, tomorrow we walk again.

All's perfectly alright.... what is an Adventure without some pitfalls? Boring..!! Well, to paraphrase Ted Simon, "The interruptions are the adventure". Or, I also once heard, "An adventure is a vacation gone horribly wrong". You've having the best of adventures apparently. While you'll be hanging there for a while; walking; hiking; taking pictures of the flora and fauna, etc..visit Tim Horton for their great croissants n' Coffee if there is one?

Then read my blog at leisure about our Hacking Alaska where we got stranded in WhiteHorse, Yukon and finally totally disabled 100 miles from Haines, AK.

Cheers...

Ha, see there is he funny bit, there is NO Tim Horton in this town.....

We continue to walk, fish and watch bad TV. The good news is that the transmission is done and on it's way back

The BAD news is we still have to wait thru next week for it to turn up ;-(

So we hit the internet.... and found http://ldair.ca/ this is a float plane company that runs from Burns Lake!!! Wooo hoooo, called and they had a vacancy at one of the fishing cabins. O crap yea!!! We are flying to the cabin (its the only way to get there) it is the ONLY accommodation on the lake and we will be the ONLY people on the lake. This just sounds better and better... There shall be posts after we return, for some reason there is no internet on the lake, go figure.

Be back soonish

The last few days and the wait for the transmission

Before we get to the vacation from the vacation we should tell about what we had been doing in the mean time...

Again we walked

This is at the bottom of a gully

Cave was well marked on the trial, pain to get down to. Even harder to get back up to the trail but the cave was cool.

and we fished

We saw some sites in other towns

and saw this

Tomorrow we take off to Tesla Lake

Tesla....

Don't think either of us slept much, but it was time

We made friends with the local dog

Video crew onsite for a Burns Lake video

Gas is always a good idea

Take some photos of the plane/s

I think we are missing someone

Much better

Short video of the flight!!!

The Lake

We arrived to a perfect day, sunny, warm, glass like water.

After have issues getting the boats started we fished off the dock and caught this guy

Same one just another photo

What can i say but YUMMY

We bought food with, so steak and fish was on the menu, with home made steak sauce.

Yes, yes neither are cooked as yet

The cabin was great, solar powered, hot water, perfect for where and what it is...

and the views... lots o pics

Day 2 starts here

We came in off the water, as there had been some rain, and hunger had gotten the better of us. The clouds had been around all day and the thunder from the other valleys had been in the distance. That was until a HUGE crash bang, Amie and I almost jumped into each others arms. I do think my heart skipped a beat, as it was not just the noise but you felt it too. We finished cooking an early dinner thinking the rain would pass, that was till i looked thru the kitchen window. Hmmm, there use to be a shore in that direction. A wall of rain and hail was headed towards us!!!

The aftermath showed how much hail and rain fell

The cabin held up very well, it has too these lakes freeze during the winter!!!

Day 3 and 4

We caught NOTHING, we fished, ate, drank and looked at the vistas. Not even a damn bear or moose to be seen... So below are just some more photos...

The last nite was cool, so to make everything cabinish we had a fire

And then they come a take you back to reality

The transmission should have arrived.......

08/15/13 etc Transmission has arrived

The float plane drops us back to reality, what a drag.

08/15

Back to the hotel and check the voice mail, woo hoo the post office has called and the transmission has come in. A brisk 10 min walk to collect the tranny, then a sit and wait to be picked up so I can get this sucker in.

Lay the tools out and start work, tranny went in nice and smooth, I also remembered to lube the splines I know, I know... Everything went well, took a couple of times to get the swing arm positioned and then attach the driveshaft to the tranny, getting so damn close.

Bugger, the drive shaft is hanging up on the notch in the swingarm that allows the bike to run my car rims. hmm thats not right. Lets try again. Loosen everything up, still binding.

By now getting a tad frustrated, loosen the swingarm pivot blots so i can move it left and right. Maybe just maybe this will do the trick? Custom parts and all.... Nothing, the bell coupling (? name) keeps binding on the notch.

I need a break

08/16

Back to the rig, picking some additional items from NAPA. Refreshed for a good night sleep it is time to try again. What had i done wrong the first day? As soon as i sit down to start work the rain starts, Amie and I quickly fashion some rain jackets for garbage bags (very sexy indeed) and i start work.

No matter what i try the bell coupling is still hanging up. Slightly damp and frustrated we stop for the day, not much of a day really. We head back to the room to drink a beer or 5 and to think about this.

After about beer two I come up with a theory.

1) While getting ready for the trip we (royal we) re-welded the notch in the swingarm to try and take care of some leaks.

2) When the pawl clip was replace the shop noticed that the output bearings were loose, so we had them replaced.

Conclusion (at least in my mind, it has been wrong before) The welding took up a few extra mm of space in the swing arm, once the output bearings were replaced this removed a few mm of play. The result; my inability to get everything to line up???

So the cunning plan, go back to the rig today (stay dry) and see if i can make this work as is, may be it is still just me!!! Or remove swing arm and workout a way to pull the driveshaft, grind the welding in the swingarm to give the required space I need....

Will let you know how this all goes.....

Well there's the problem

So after a morning of going back over the rig i have found the NEW issue... HA, looks like my assumption was correct. The cup that fits the finaldrive is hanging up / being pushed by the weld from the notch... The new weld was a really good idea at the time, but with the new output bearings in the tranny there is no clearance. Off to the machine shop Monday to see what we can do with what we have.... Pics below, hard to see in the pics, but even harder to get a good photo of the issue.

It causes this issue

It pushes the driveshaft all the way to the right, there is no movement. To say it is binding..... Monday we shall see what can be done.
