Rested and feeling much better we head into Manhattan for the afternoon. But before we head out the tent needs a really good drying

Our first stop is down town, my old work place. Great to catchup.... The office is just one block away from the World Trade Center site, this is the first time i have seen it since the new tower has been up

We head up town to grab (you guessed it) food and a drink and meetup with an old friend...

Sorry no pics... I think i need to fire the photographer. The sun sets and the city lights come on.

Kept it a short day, we are still a bit sore from all the riding. It is taking longer than expected for my back to feel better and really don't want to make it any worse.

Last pic for the day, i love the power poles in NYC (Queens) so busy

10-27-13 NYC (Still)

It is so nice to be in a place where we know people!!! We have been catching up with friends, even some who we did not know would be in the area.

What else? We have seen some views

Been out with friends

Eaten well

just being us in a place we know is wonderful.

We still have to work on the bike, the current plan is to head to Connecticut once we have collected all the parts. There we shall take care of everything and push south before it gets too cold.

10-28-13 we did more stuff NYC

Today we put the "we have been here before" thing behind us and went out to do some sight seeing. In reality we walked lots and really only saw the statue of liberty, that only from the Staten Island Ferry (great free way to see it) but it is a step in the right direction, right?

Selection of today's photos.

There is more good news, my re-built final drive should be on it's way this week. Still need to call about the other parts i ordered last week and never got a call back on, hmmmmm....

Glad to see you are back on the road and having fun. What's up with all of the repairs? We spent 2 months after a 2 year build sorting you out.

We had been expecting parts...

One of the east coast BMW shops screwed the pooch and I didn't follow up. I had spoken to them a week ago, was told they need to check on some things and order others. hmmm, they never did. Nor did they call or anything.

We had a very curt conversation today and than I went elsewhere to order. We lost a week but you know what; we are on vacation!!!

Hope to have them next week

Well we are still here... The parts have arrived, now i just need my final Drive. Really hoping it ships this week, but that does not seem to be the way of things.

Once it arrives we shall head to CT and get to work, Amie has already made plans for Thanksgiving ;-) we shall be heading to a friends place in NJ to house and dog sit for a few days.... I don't know what is making Amie happier; the thought of Thanksgiving dinner or having a dog (albeit a loaner) for a few days.

For the past few day we have also been dealing with a tummy bug; it has not been pretty ;-) both very pleased we are 1) not camping 2) have a place of our own for the time being ;-)

We have been out and about. You know our usual things

Food (with drink)

Drinks (without food)

If you are in the Theater District go and check this place out... They have a great selection beer, most of it you can pick from the fridge yourself. Very cool place to grab a drink.

Even found a photo-booth, we had to

A reminder that the seasons are changing

Yep it's all changing...

Well we are still in NYC, hmm... The good news is the final drive is going in the mail today (we shall see), all the other parts have arrived; with any luck we can start to move shortly!!!

We got over the tummy bugs we both had only then to come down with colds, yea it's been that much fun With any luck it is all out of our systems.

In the mean time we have pulled our sorry buts out of bed to do a couple of things. We watched the launch to the international space station from times square, along with maybe 20 others. I guess a Russian launch is not the most popular event, even thou it was carrying an Olympic torch.

Can you see it?

Times square is filled with huge screens (as i am sure you all know) well the broadcast was on one of the smallest screens the square has.

Would have been better to watch it online O well. It was my geek out for the week.

We have been in contact with an ADVer from NJ, he has been following along with this report and made us an offer of lunch and drinks. Who can refuse such an offer? Unfortunately the day we were to go Amie was not feeling so great, so i headed out on my own to the wilds of NJ...

Millington NJ....

Getting off the train i was quickly reminded that YES the season is changing and we really need to get moving south!!!

Lunch and beer was had, great conversation ensued and once again no pics, HA i really am bad at this.... Casey, thanks again for the invite. We will drop you a line when we get back to NJ. For those who are interested have a look at Casey's ride report. http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=916745

Well as i said at the start of this post, the final drive should go out today; we are both very excited about this. The plan remains the same; get to CT fix all that needs to be done and then start moving again. All this sitting still...

Wow, that is strange. I responded to a comment in my report, went to the main page and low and behold an update for episode IV.

Was great meeting you and I very much enjoyed lunch and listening about your travels so far. I think what gets lost with your report is how long you've been on the road and how much you still have left to do. Keep on keeping on. I look forward to watching the rest of your trip unfold.

If you need anything, I'm only a phone call away.

11-25-13 we have been busy

The last few days have been spent in CT working on the bike and catching up with family. We only needed one more day to get everything done, but pre-made plans need to be kept. We left the apartment we had been using in NYC to head back to our friends place in Queens, the bike has been sitting out the front of his home for the past month (im sure all the neighbors are very happy to get the parking space back). The day before departure was spent buying a battery charger and waiting for the batteries to charge, they never did get completely full! at least the rig will have a chance at starting now. A fun night with friends and the hangover to prove it in the morning.

Thursday and we are off, all parts had arrived with only one small snag. The nuts i had ordered to hold the wheel dogs are the wrong size, hmmm. a quick bit of internet research found the correct size nuts, they should be meeting us in CT.

It exactly what i wanted, how did they know?

The weather is really catching up with us, not so bad today but as we realized very quickly if we don't get south soon we may not be able / wanting to do so.

Thursday was spent catching up and buying shoes. Half way to CT Amie realized that we had both left our shoes in NYC, damn. Lunch and a quick Wal-Mart stop later and we arrived, unloaded and once again appreciated a real roof over our heads. Ohh and for the first time ever the parts that were to arrive did so on time, we have nuts!!!

Friday we start work on the old rear wheel, off to the machine shop. The bearings were stuck, they had worn a very good groove into the hub making the removal of them extremely difficult. Let me put it this way, we will NOT be using the bearings again (I really do hope that memory serves correctly and i have 4 spares). After a few curt words are exchanged in the direction of the wheel the bearings come out and the full extent of the damage can be seen, it was not pretty. But after some discussion we come up with a game plan that may or may not work, it seems to be the way of things! Off we set out to find the bearing inserts that will be used to take up the slack in the race. With these acquired the wheel inserts etc are left at the machine shop to see what progress can be made over the weekend.

Saturday is bike service day, we have secured space at a local CT MC workshop (secret location).

This is not the first time the bike and i have been surrounded by Harleys while working ;-) This will be a general service, with the intent to leave the bike rolling and working until we know that the wheel fix is at the very least feasible. We were assisted at the workshop by one of the prospects and a full member, the prospect was working on his own project and have a much worse time of it than i was. All i can say is i now know how loudly a bike can backfire (you may have to speak louder these days).

The service went as well as could be expected, I had decided that not looking at the current final drive was preferable as not knowing is sometimes better. We can deal with that once we have 3 good wheels. So there we are bike is back together; oil, leaks, plug caps, etc etc, time to start her.

Nothing! That was the sound i heard, well, not exactly nothing, just the starter spinning... Ahh crap. No spark; well there's your problem! Now just to find out why! Tank off again, go back thru, think Matt think, what did you do. After some thought and a flashlight i discovered the issue. When moving the coils around the linkage wire between the coils had come off, that would do it. Some quick tests prove this was the issue. Tank back on and she fires right up. Happy dance...

Sunday, ahh Sunday; it is to be a day of rest. A scenic drive and a trip to the movies, nothing more needs to be said. Except maybe; damn is it cold, the wind cuts straight thru. A good day to be in a car, tomorrow i have to ride again thou. We stopped at the Book Barn in Niantic CT, there is a few of them in the Town most of them with resident cats. We made friends.

Monday. We have been living in CA for the past 7 years, both of us have gotten very unaccustomed to the cold. this morning it is very cold 22 ish, frozen puddles abound. We discovered that the rig feels the same way about the cold weather, it really did not want to wake up this cold morning. The starter whirring, the bike sputtering, the battery voltage dropping, Matt really hoping we don't have to bump start it. Slowly but surely she comes to life, Matt with a great sense of relief. Did i mention how damn cold it is? Even with heated grips my finger tips were frozen, i start to wonder how i ever did this in my formative years?

We arrive at the machine shop and get to work.

Some amazing machinery at this shop

The thing weighs over 5 tons

Unfortunately the prototype wheel is the only wheel to get its new bearing pack / system. It seems to be this way, i am getting more used to the idea. Schedules are only ideas when riding. We bench test the new bearing arrangement and it seems good to go. The bearing retainers seem to be doing their jobs and the new spacers are keeping everything in place, but only time will tell how this will all hold up. The decision is made to start machining the next wheel. We seem to be reinventing the wheel (corny I know). During the day we came across a few issues, all of witch now have solutions. The day is over, we use the newly finished wheel on the sidecar so it can be ridden back to our temporary abode and left there for the next week, as tomorrow we head back to NJ and NYC to house sit and visit friends for the holiday.

Just a quick FYI. I ordered 3 new wheel dogs (cups / splines whatever you want to call them) from Bobs BMW, they had one on the shelf and ordered me 2 more. The reason i bring this up is the 2 that came from BMW did not fit the rebuilt finaldrive, the older one that was in stock fit perfectly. I had to file and sand the new wheel dogs (cups / splines whatever you want to call them) down a little to get them all to fit.

11-26-13 Good bye CT for now and a trian

The evening before we leave is a low key affair, pizza and Netflix. Our gracious host who has not had TV in some time sat up till 6am watching the entire first season of Sons of Anarchy, I only made it thru ep # 7.

Today we head back to NYC for a quick visit with friends and then on to our holiday house / dog sitting. We had been trying to workout the best (cheapest) way to get back to NYC from where we were in CT, what we figured was it would be a 2 train trip as the Amtrak fares were just outrages, yep their holiday fares were in effect. When we got to the station things changed. Just 2 days ago Amtrak was wanting to charge approx $75pp CT to NYC, upon arrival the ticket price had dropped to $45pp. Still not cheap but seeing that it would get us in 2 hours than the alternative well worth it.

We make good use of the extra 2 hours and meet up with friends for lunch and drinks. It's great to be back in the city. Tomorrow is our Thanksgiving shopping day, almost like a real life again. I mean a house, dog and a holiday, it will be great.
