Hey guys! Been lurking on here for a couple of years, but never posted before. I enjoy the forum!

I have a '92 XR600R that I have had for 12 years now. It's been a great bike- put many miles on it. It's been mostly dirt, but it's street legal for CO also, so some road miles also.

A couple of years ago, it started ticking a little on me- pretty sure it's timing chain after doing some reading. I'm not a bike mechanic, but I do most of the work on my own vehicles and always adjusted my own valves on the old 600.

Anyway, long story short, I took my bike into a guy to do some diagnostics on the noise and just kind of do a check-up in general. I just started a new job and will be finding and moving into a new house in the near future and want to get the bike in tip top running condition, and I just have to many projects to start a new one that I'm going to have to do a lot of learning and research on as I go.

This guy is supposed to be a pretty good mechanic, but doesn't work on XR's a ton and my XR and I have a pretty good bond- I would like to know that it's getting the very best! I would like to ride it for many more years to come, and want to make sure any work I get done to it is going to be the highest quality with reliability and functionality being priorities.

The guy did a compression test and said the compression is reading 125 p.s.i. and that the right exhaust valve was a little to tight and there are more threads showing on that valve than all the others, which he says makes him worried that the valve is pulling through the head? He is wanting to pull the whole engine just to get a look at the head. Is pulling the engine really necessary just to peek at the head? Seems like I have seen guys on here rebuild the whole top end while still in the frame!

I was wondering if you guys could maybe give me info on a good mechanic on CO's front range. I wish Steve (MCMA111) was closer- I would like that kind of experience!

Bike is stock except for xr's only choke plate and no snorkel on the airbox or screen, and pro-circuit rebuilt my rear shock about 7-8 years ago.

The motor has been back from Steve for awhile now, But since the bike is this far down anyway, I thought I might go ahead and do my own version of "Restoring an XR600 to it's former glory". I really like what Blakebird did in his thread, and will be doing similarly- although There will be a few changes made to make this build original. By the way- he's a tough act to follow! His attention to detail is awesome! My compliments Blakebird! Hope we can ride sometime! ;)

The motor, it was decided, was going to stay fairly mild for now. We went the next size over and an 11:1 Wiseco piston! (98mm- does anyone know how many cc's that makes it? Or can you tell me how to figure it?) Steve also put in a new timing chain in it because mine was stretched. I can hardly wait to fire this new motor up!

Started on Saturday morning. Had this within a couple of hours:

Ready to be cleaned and inspected thoroughly for cracks.

One thing I do want to get squared away, is my left foot peg is twisted counterclockwise looking from that side of the bike, and angles up. I am having a hard time figuring out if it's just the peg bent or if it's the mount on the frame? Can any of you guys with XR's tell from looking at the picture?:
