Trip planning: Don't know where I'm going, but I'll sure as hell know once I've been!

Hey all. Decided to come over to advrider form svrider for some trip planning. Figured this is the place to ask.

So I want to go on a motorcycle journey....
Thats all I've got as of yet (besides my 05SVS) but that's got to be step one of any trip

I've spent my whole life in the North East besides trips to Florida, an airport in Salt Lake City, and alot of the big beautiful island of Hawaii, and I want to see America!

Anyway I have some idea of how I want the trip to go so I'm gonna lay out my plans so far. I have a few questions but feel free to chime in on anything I missed.

First off I plan this with length of trip being a non-issue. I'm 19 so if this pans out I'm quitting my dead-end college kid job.

I don't know yet if I want to go all the way West but damn would it be a good feeling to see the pacific. Even if I don't I know I want to take southern route out (musts would be New Mexico and Texas) and a northern route out (Ct, NY, PA, OH, IN, IL, IA, NE, WY, ??)

I'm looking to do TONS of camping. So I'm wondering how sketchy it is pulling off the road and camping, or how receptive people are to letting you set up camp on their land. with camping I'm wondering where you get basic stuff like a shower....

Anyway my Givi 201 soft saddlebags and Joe Rocket Hammerhead tank bag are arriving tomorrow so I need a list of things to fill them with no tail/seat bag yet but I'm looking.

If anyone has suggested routes, must see stops, camping tips, items that some packing lists don't have, or any thing at all please post!

Apologies if anything on here doesn't make sense. Much of it is copypasta'd from my svrider thread.

My camping days are far behind me ,but when I moto-camped I would always notify each states tourism dept.
You would usually recieve a state map and a listing of state parks and facilities.
I found these to usually be cheaper and you will know if they have shower and bathroom facilities.

Jeans(2 pair)-x I would go with one pair long pants, synthetic. Jeans are heavy, bad when wet, and generally unnecessary, especially since you have riding pants.
basketball shorts(2 pair)-x Only need one of each of these
t-shirts(4, synthetics)-x""Okay, two won't hurt, so you can wash one of them while wearing the other
long sleeve shirt(2, synthetics)-x""
bandana-x
1 liter water bottle-x
1 liter emergency fuel-x
common sv wrenches-x
common sv hex keys-x
chain lube-x
chain maintenance/tightening tools-x
tire plugging and inflation kit-
cell phone-x
sneakers-x
riding boots-x
backpacking stove-
1 good book-x A kindle is great, as you can have a bunch of great books, but it is an extra expense if you don't have one
gps-
headphones(2)-x
road atlas-
towel-x If just for space and time, this is a good one to get from the backpacking store.
pressure gauge-x
socks (wool)+underwear(seamless ass?)-x
GoPro-
chargers-x
rain gear-
bike cover/tarp-x
gloves-x
sunscreen-x
toiletries-x
3 in 1 shower gel-x If you get camp suds, this doubles as dish soap
I marked this up a little for you, from my experience backpacking, and what I learned on my recent trip south.

Just strap on a duffel bag and go, if you overplan it you'll end up wussing out and staying home. Check out the JamieZ threads for cheap traveling tips. Would you rather regret the things you've done or not done?
