Was a left-hander too so not the cold side of the tire issue. Certainly enough to make settling for third on a weekend of havoc seem very, very clever.
Rossi has always reminded me of Alain Prost in his demonstrated ability to calculate cost/benefit ratios on the fly (and then execute accordingly).

I saw that. Very flash!

So, where did he get that loot? I didn't think salaries were THAT high in his era - though he did have a sustained period of dominance - so I assumed that much of it must have come from sponsors and post-career acumen.

Aren't most contracts* structured with healthy bonuses for podiums, wins and championships? I'm sure the the aliens get a big salary but those bonuses are where most* riders get any real money from manufacturers. I think it can be the same for personal sponsors. I remember reading a column by Kevin Schwantz saying he made something like $5 million the year he won the championship. Looking at that number, its not hard to guess that Doohan did really well.

Did Doohan use a tax haven like Monaco? That could make big difference, too.

*most does not mean Rossi and Lorenzo. They are the exception.

Wow, you got the pulse of Alain Prost! Very good comparison. But Vale has been known to be a little more Hail Mary than Prost ever was in my view.

Remember Rossi's Corkscrew? How about the brake check a few laps later. Even last weekend at Saxony he ran through the dirt in two successive laps while battling through the chicane. Jeepers!

I think he came up short Sunday because he was unable to give decent feedback for set-up. His bike faded like all the others except CC and MM. Those two ran fast laps to the end.

Hell, maybe it is Rossi's crew chief. That fellow is pretty far over the hill and probably beyond his skill set these days. Old school is probably not as relevant. Marky Mark and CC certainly highlight that!

I sense we are witnessing a big time changing of the guard...

Dale Quarterley.

I saw 1/4ley on the back of his leathers most of the time.

I'm sure the private (as in Private...) jet charter business he has would be reasonably profitable.
