Garmin Nuvi 550 MicroSD card - what size?

Updating my maps last evening the Garmin tools suggested a MicroSD card to expand the memory of my Nuvi 550.

Can anyone enlighten me on the largest capacity card the Nuvi 550 can utilize?

Thanks in advance,
Rick

I don't know the answer to your question but....

I do own a Nuvi 500 (same basic unit as 550) and a 60CSx.
I think the issue that becomes an problem will be the max number of map tiles vs. the chip size.

Will it recognize an 8 or 16 gig chip, don't know but with my maps I reach what I think is a 2025 tile limit at approx. 1 gig to 2 gigs.

In the USA the 500 comes with CN & Topo preloaded to internal memory and I have added Roads & Rec (500mb) to a 2 gig chip.

The Garmin Support forums list the maximum supported sd card size for the nuvi series to be 8 gb. If you're just adding room for map updates, 4 gb is sufficient.

Thanks for the feedback. I ordered an 8 gb card and will get it in when I can get the back off of the blasted case.

It goes in under the battery, and the back cover/case is not popping up to let me have access.

Okay. Card is in and the maps are updated.

Does the Nuvi 550 utilize the MicroSD card like RAM in a computer, or is it strictly for data storage?

Just storage.
