Two DR650's on the beach in South Australia

Dave and I decided to break up the working week and go riding on Wednesday. We chose Goolwa Beach at the Murray Mouth in South Australia as our destination. We've been discussing the need to start practicing our sand riding if we're going to attempt the Simpson Desert next year. Dave also wanted to flog his new pre-abused DR to test its metal.

So with just a few pics and a couple of quick and dirty videos taken on the Samsung Galaxy SII this is how the day turned out....

A bit more bitumen than intended out of Blackwood before finding some good tracks and lovely views along the Fleurieu Peninsula.

It was 4 degrees Celsius and the sun was just beginning to thaw us out.

We arrived in Goolwa about 9.00am. A quick coffee and lowering of tyre pressures and we hit the beach...

Slightly over confident we both gunned it for the Murray Mouth. I got stuck in a deep 4wd rut and crashed while attempting to ride out of it. Too bad there's no photo!

Dave on the other hand...

There's some small dunes at the end of the beach and we headed out to see what our sand legs were really like

Nice!
That salt water could cause problems maybe?

So how do you think you will handle the desert?I'd like to do it some day to.

Hey dazza we gave the bikes a good wash at the end of the ride so they should be fine. I reckon we'll be alright in the desert. The main thing we realised is we need to get fitter!

I'll post some video here when i figure out how to do it

I come off the bike a couple of weeks ago similar to how you did although i wasn't on sand & ended up bruising my ribs & shoulder.
Got into a rut ,tried steering out of it but i went one way & the bike just stayed in the rut.I think the heavy front end of the klr with a near full tank of juice doesn't help.

Anyway,good luck with your trip.

Yeh its certainly more difficult with a full tank. I put 30L in the safari tank and estimate there was 4-6 L in it beforehand. As soon as the front wheel hit the edge of the rut it turned full lock and the bike just stopped and spat me off over the bars.

Thats where a stearing damper would come in handy but for $400+ it aint gonnna happen.

Was a fun day.

We took the airbox cover off and drained the 3-4 inches of water out of the airbox. A few more presses of the button and the old girl cranked over.

On to Callington where Dave fuelled up and we parted ways. Dave to take dirt roads back to Blackwood and me to hit the freeway back in to Adelaide.

Great day out with a good mate.

Did that a couple of years ago on my own, but not rideing in the surf, great fun , had to realy gun it near the mouth where they dumped all the sand from the dredging and the 4wd's all got bogged and made a mess of deep ruts. Up on the pegs and weight right back. Thanks for sharing..( I sprayed all my spoke nuts with penetrating oil after washing off the sand. ) Marty (+1 DR)

Hey Marty. Some bits were quite soft and chopped up by the 4wd's closer to the dunes but it wasn't too bad really. The riding was as difficult as we wanted to make it as we had the option of riding the smooth stuff closer to the water when we wanted to open it up. I gave my bike a thorough soapy wash at a car wash on the way home, sprayed engine cleaner all over it and then a high pressure rinse.
