Extra Electrons

How much EXTRA DC auxiliary power is available, on the F8 , over and above the
"Base Load" of fuel pump, ignition, and LOW beam headlamp ?
.
I have no hard numbers, but I can confirm that my F800 will support TWO electric vests, grip heat, and HIGH beam for 24 hours straight, no problem..
.
My question pertains to auxiliary lighting, an I wonder if I can run a pair of 55 watt H3 Piaa lamps, in addition to the 'normal' touring loads.
. The owners manual spec of " 400 watts " alternator output means exactly nothing, as no net machine load is specified.

JoelWisman posted the results of some testing he did. It's around here somewhere. Search around.

The link I saved to the post no longer works,
but I believe his post is in this thread...

The rough answer is that (screaming down the highway) you have something like 130 watts to mess with...
plus another 50 watts if you don't run your hi-beam,
plus another 45 watts if you don't run (or don't have) the heated grips.

I would strongly recommend investing in one of the voltage monitoring gadgets since it varies with engine RPM and the charging system on the older models is not so great ... etc...

I can confirm that F800GS WILL run TWO electric heated vests, Highbeam , pair of AUX lights, and heated grips on HIGH setting, for 800 miles, in the rain.

I would look into LED over the old fashioned H3 stuff :). Plus they are smaller. You can get them in everything from Wide flood to pencil beam spots.

your looking at maybe 10W for LED instead of 110w for the pair of H3's.

Buy Rigid lights. Super tough, and LED. Uses very very little power
