Seen from the outside this all makes it look heroic, not annoying.
True grit.

You wait any longer, and you'll be riding in snow.

But being from Lappe, you're used to it....

Probably will snow

I'm pretty much geared up now again, still waiting for the damn windscreen deflector...UPS strikes again...ya I know but it was the only shipping choice. Supposed to arrive today...like it was supposed to arrive yesterday

The suspense is probably killing you guys All I need, beside the windscreen deflector, is a little push in the right direction...good thing my driveway slopes downhill

I'm gearing up for a cold, wet ride for the last week in July, I'll be crossing the prairies anyway...hopefully the weather turns better in August...if it doesn't, I'm heading south

When I rode the Dalton it was the first week of August. Because of our motos, my friend and I both needed good weather, and we got it. I was on my BMW-RT, and my friend was riding a '78 Oldwing. While traveling north, I talked to a couple riders I met coming south on the AlCan, and the ones I spoke to at Beaver Creek had hit lots of rain and slime on the Dalton. I figured the weather would change, like it does here, and that my friend and I had a day or so of good weather open to us. We high tailed it out of Fairbanks right away, and had sun and dry both ways.

Now, riding the AlCan; there was fairly constant wet weather from Calgary all the way to NWT. On the return trip, wet across the prairies all the way home. Again, when it counts, we got dry weather on the Dalton. I'm planning for you to have the same...

Deadhorse 1 - Lappeman 0...

Time to even the score!!

Day 1...again

Woke up this morning to rain and wind, so I checked the radar...it was the old storm system circling over Thunder Bay and was not forecasted to move on anytime in the next 2 or 3 days...so I jumped on my bike and headed east to sunnier skies Forecast looked good for Manitoba, so I figured if I could ride thru it, all will be well. Ended up plugging in the electrics around Ignace...cold It rained until Dryden where it gave way to cloud and a strong wind. By Winnipeg it had cleared but was very windy and about 16c. I was pushed sideways by a strong north wind all the way to Saskatchewan were the winds finally subsided. I made it into Yorkton and tried to find the old campgrounds where I had camped 4 years ago but I was really tired and disorientated and no one seemed to know what I was talking about. Ended up getting a hotel room, which turns out to be probably a good thing, since forecast is for lows of 5c or less tonight

I can't seem to get my photos uploaded to photobucket right now, so they'll have to wait for another day.

Were you on the Perimeter? Heavy Thunderstorms with heavy rain forecasted for Sat/Sun in High Level and up including Yellowknife...might skip Yellowknife?

Day 2...

Well, it started out nice and Sunny and about 7c. Got going early morning again and soon was clicking off the kms! The wind had changed to out of the south west...guess it had to make up for my left side of my neck hurting yesterday from the north west wind...now it was the right side of my neck taking the force

Finally made it into Alberta at saw a sign for Cold Lake...never been there, so I headed north since the clouds were gathering and getting darker to the west by the minute. I arrived in Cold Lake and went down to the marina and looked around a bit...not too exciting, so I gassed up and punched in Slave Lake on the GPS...that would be a good place to stop for the night after about 14 hours on the bike! Right when I left Cold Lake...and oh, was Cold Lake cold, ya betcha it was, plus 7c ...it started to rain, and rain it did...day turned to night and it poured! The going got slower and slower as I tried to keep the KLR upright between the standing water in the truck grooves. Soon the Frog Troggs were starting to fail...note to self: put the neck warmer over the rain gear not under, when it was wet, it started to drip down my front Waterproof boots...not so waterproof anymore! I had the grip heater on full and it was burning my hands...but it felt oh so good!! Finally I had enough. I wasn't going to make Slave Lake today, falling about 150kms short of my goal, 1050kms would have to suffice! I made 1160kms yesterday, so it wasn't a bad day overall. I happened upon a place called Athabasca, AB and looked around for a motel...what is it with the lack of Motels up here, everything is Hotels and you have to lug your gear in and out! Anyway, another expensive but comfortable night, trying to dry gear out for tomorrows adventure!

I'm still having a hard time uploading any photos...not that I've taken much...the prairies are oh so boring!! Managed to get the one pic uploaded! Hopefully the rain lets up tomorrow and I can continue along!

Alberta!

Not sure where all this cold weather is coming from - but it sure isn't typical for July. Hope the weather improves for you Rob. Great ride report so far!
