BMW GS - the official bike of Mt. Evans.

At least it was today. We saw 6 of them on the ride up along with a few Electraglides. This is probably a better motorcycle destination in July and August when temperatures soar into the 40s.

Was there a sale on Speed Limit signs? This seems a bit redundant.

I've got no snarky comment for this one. It's just a nice view.

I just about managed to rub my mirror on this one. What the hell is that guy thinking? I'm already dizzy as hell and he's out for a jog.

ROCK!!

Or, at least, that's what I would have yelled into the headset if I wasn't thinking how hilarious it would be for Mike to hit it. Seconds later, I was still giggling to myself when I heard him yelling. Something about giving a brother a heads up or some such nonsense. I was busy getting stoned on oxygen depravation and wondering where all these bats had come from. (obscure HST reference)

SIGNS of ALTITUDE SICKNESS

Lightheadedness - check
Disorientation - check
Under-estimation of danger - WooHOO!

That little ribbon of white below is the road we just rode up on...pretty cool.

Having walked briskly across the parking lot to arrive at this scenic locale, I must admit that I was quite properly stoned at this point. Mike and I were still wearing our helmets and talking on the headsets, but he was off looking for a bathroom. I was amazed at how dizzy I was. I've been up here many times over the years, but this was probably the worst I ever felt. I was wondering if dehydration may have been playing a factor. Right about then MIke was shouting in my ear about some hallucination he was having outside the bathroom...some big white hairy monster was after him...I assumed it was a Yeti and wanted to rush over to get the footage. Instead, I stumbled over to his general vicinity.

I spied the monster in question and crept up for a closer look...he was 8' tall if he was a foot...ferrocious...aggressive...angry. Surely this was the great beast of legend. Mike was still talking to me from inside the bathroom now. He was pretty sure he imagined the whole thing, but he wasn't coming out to confirm it. He had encountered the scourge of the Rockies...the terrible beast of Mt. Evans...the mountain goat.

Here's what happens when I'm trying to figure out how to STOP recording. Honestly, I was really trying hard to figure this out. My cognitive resources severely limited by multiple factors, I strained to find the shiny silver button.

I surely have no idea what my wife sees in this guy...

So here we are at the peak...some 14,000 feet above sea level...about 13,000 feet above my home...we're wandering around, taking pictures with tourists from foreign lands, and talking about our trip with curious bystanders...all the while I'm sensing the void beckoning...my field of vision seems to narrow and darken from time to time...breathing is labored...I feel as though I'm towing my head around on a string, like a balloon, many feet behind me. I physically arrive at a destination long before I realize I'm there. Judging by the laughter, I'll assume Mike is there as well. I have serious concerns about our ability to navigate the road down...I'm not even confident that I can navigate a trip to the restroom. This is big fun!

I tell MIke that I'm fairly confident that we're going to die up here. He seems amused and not terribly troubled by the notion. More laughter ensues.

If you're considering a ride up Mt. Evans, I really wouldn't recommend June. Things are much nicer in July or August when temperatures sore way up into the 40s. The grass is green, the wildflowers bloom, and the mountain goats come up top to chill. Here are some pictures from the last time I was up here. I crept around like an oxygen deprived ninja to get these...

You're gonna want to crawl up there and cuddle with them in the grass, but resist the urge...Momma doesn't roll like that. Unfortunately, one of the effects of high altitude is an inability to recognize danger so I'm sure you'll be OK.
