Back to the ride report. We rode up through Winter Park to Granby and then to town of Grand Lake on the north shore of...you guessed it...Grand Lake. The ride is not terribly interesting, but the little town of Grand Lake is a nice little tourist spot. It's the last bit of civilization before you enter Rocky MOuntain National Park.

Unfortunately for us, the skies were black and threatening to the north...the exact direction we were heading. We'd have to don our super suits pretty soon. I was hoping to at least make it to the park entrance so I could pay my entrance fee without disrobing at the toll booth. We took a quick run up and down the main strip of Grand Lake , topped off our gas tanks, and headed for what was most assuredly going to be a wet tour of one of my favorite national parks.

I recorded the entire ride through RMNP despite the less than ideal conditions. This was Monday 10JUN13 and a lightning strike in the Big Meadows area today would start a forest fire that consumed 600 acres and could be seen all the way to Estes Park. Based on the storm clouds we were looking at, we must have just missed the initial strike near the south/west entrance where we came in. I was a little concerned about lightning strikes above tree line where we were effectively unprotected, but we pressed on.

Mike never mentioned being concerned about it...or anything else for that matter...I wonder what that's like.

Since you folks seem to enjoy photos, once again, I went through the video and captured still frames from the ride. Welcome to another "That's My Junk Production."

I'm not sure what was happening here...perhaps I needed to limber up before putting the helmet on my head...I hear Francis Ford Coppola used to start all of his movies this same way...get the uncut version of Apocalypse Now and you'll see.

We got to the park entrance and there was nobody home...just a sign that said go on in...sweet!...a free pass. It started to rain almost immediately and we pulled over to gear up. There were elk all around us and people snapping pictures like crazy, but they were a bit preoccupied with the task at hand. I was suited up and ready to rock in 3 minutes...Mike was still looking for his rain gear.

The next 5 minutes of the video is just me pacing back and forth, mumbling to myself about the value of a laminated packing list, and waiting on Mike. He finally got dressed.

We had been standing there so long, I forgot whether or not I had even started the camera recording. I'll just have Mike take a look...

"Is this thing on?"

"Say hello to the folks at home in case we get struck by lightning and this is the last time they ever see you."

That ones a keeper for sure

NOOOOOOOOOO! He's going for the rain mittens! After he gets the first one on, he can never get the second one on...we'll be here all night. I usually lose patience and put his mitten on for him by this point...like one of my kids.

Off we go into the belly of the beast. Note the high tech waterproof electronics.

At this point, I'm hoping that rain doesn't turn to snow and wondering what the likelihood is of these wet roads turning icy at the top. I bet Mike isn't the least bit concerned.
